#AUSTRIA: Months After Leaving Politics After "Holocaust/Nazi Songbook" Controversy, Udo Landbauer Quietly Returns

After nearly a seven month absence after a "songbook" of neo-Nazi songs his fraternity composed came to light, forcing him to leave politics, Lower Austrian Freedom Party official Udo Landbauer has quietly returned to politics. He is set to take over the position of the club president of the Freedom Party in the Lower Austrian parliament. The return comes at the behest, and support, of Vice-Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache, who called on Landbauer to be "fully rehabilitated. However, Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner, a member of the Austrian People's Party, had made it clear that she will not work together with Landbauer. In January, Landbauer was forced to leave politics after lyrics celebrating the Holocaust and Nazism were found in a songbook created by a fraternity in which he was deputy chairman.

#ETHIOPIA: New Embassy In Eritrean Capitol Marks New Beginning In Ethiopian-Eritrean Relations

Eritrea formally seceded from Ethiopia in 1993 after a long battle for independence, but the two fought a border war in 1998 that left at least 80,000 dead. A peace deal was signed two years later, but Ethiopia refused to implement it, saying it wanted more talks.

#UGANDA: Protests Erupt After Two Lawmakers Arrested At Airport Trying To Seek Treatment For Injuries While In Gov't Custody

Ugandan police detained two lawmakers, one a pop star, at the country’s sole international airport, where supporters say they were trying to seek treatment abroad for injuries suffered during torture by the security forces. The two were among five lawmakers detained on August 13 in Arua, accused of throwing stones at a presidential convoy during the campaign for a vacant seat in parliament. Kyagulyani is a pop star, known by his stage name Bobi Wine.

#FRANCE: Pres. Macron Comes Under Fire For Comments "Mocking France" During Denmark Visit

French President Emmanuel Macron, who has unsuccessfully tried to reform the French economic system, is being criticized for taking out his frustrations while visiting Denmark. "These Lutheran (protestant) people (Danish) who have experienced transformations in recent years are not exactly the Gauls, who are resistant to change," said Macron, using a term for the ancient term for France.

Opposition politicians pounced on him for showing "contempt" towards France. "The 'Gauls' will be happy to respond to his arrogance and contempt", said Marine Le Pen, leader of the National Rally Party. Far-left populist Alexis Corbière, who accused him of having “not only shown contempt towards his own people: but also of displaying "an astounding level of stupidity." Last year on a trip to Romania, Macron noted that the French "hated reforms."

Six left-wing extremists have been arrested at the Arendalsuka ("Arendal Week") political festival accused of plotting attacks on two populist parties, Stop Islamization of Norway (SIAN) and Alliance. Among the plotters arrested was the leader of a Communist group which had encouraged activists to disrupt the event The annual festival, held in the city of the southeastern city of Arendal, "is an annual national forum where delegates from politics, NGOs, industry and the public meet to debate and develop politics for the present and the future," says the event's website.

#AUSTRALIA: Tasmania Labor Party Wants To Raise Legal Age To Purchase Tobacco Products To 25

The Tasmanian state's Labor Party will consider a motion to ban the sale of cigarettes to thoe under 25 at its conference next month. Labor members living in the Kingborough municipality will seek support for its motion to raise the age that tobacco products may be sold to 25 and "to regulate the content and engineering of tobacco products – including filters and additives." #GERMANY: Record Trade Surpluses Spark Criticism From Trump, Domestic Unions

Germany is on track to record the world's largest trade surplus for a third consecutive year. The country's $299 billion surplus is poised to attract criticism, however, both at home and internationally. Pres. Germans counter by saying that German firms are estimated to employ a million people in China and more than 850,000 in the US. #GHANA: With New Calculation Method, Gov't Statistics Office Prepares To Release Data Showing 40% Higher Growth Estimates

Government officials have told local media that the economy will grow 40% more than previously estimated when it releases its economic in September. Ghana’s $47 billion economy ranks eleventh in Africa after Tanzania, according to IMF estimates for 2017. A 30% expansion will move it up one spot. The statistics office plans to also release second quarter Gross Domestic Product growth in September. The economy expanded 6.8% in the first three months, it said in June. The economy of the cocoa and gold producer expanded by 60 percent in 2010 when the country revised (rebased) the way it viewed its national GDP, leaping into middle-income status.

#SPAIN: Gov't Under Fire For Border Fence Proposal After Violent Attack By Migrants Leaves Dozens Of Border Agents Injured

Spain's Socialist government is under pressure to reverse its position on making border fences "safer" after a violent attack by hundreds of illegal migrants left border guards severely injured. Over 600 migrants from sub-Saharan Africa stormed the border in the region Ceuta. Dozens were injured as migrants bombarded agents with quicklime, sticks, stones, bags of excrement as well as aerosols used as flame throwers. Despite the attack, the Spanish government is sticking to its plans to remove the controversial razor-sharp blades on the border fences. The removal should be "immediate," said Home Secretary Fernando Grande-Marlaska.  Opposition parties say the Spanish immigrant reception system is facing collapse, given the sharp rise in numbers of refugees in recent months.

#NEPAL: New Law Seeks To Stop Christian Conversions; Protects Against "Hurting Religious Feelings"

A law criminalizing religious conversions and the "hurting of religious feelings" has gone into effect in Nepal, a year after the bill was passed. Nepal's Christian minority fears the new law will be abused by those seeking to settle scores, as has happened frequently in neighboring India. Nepal’s 2007 interim Constitution declared the country a secular state that maintained neutrality in religious affairs. That language was included in the 2015 Constitution, despite protests from Hindu nationalists, who wanted a return to Hindu statehood and who continue to protest over the word “secular” – a word they say is inappropriately adopted from the West.

More than 600 neo-Nazis took to the streets of Berlin this weekend to commemorate the death of leading Nazi-era figure Rudolf Hess, as counter-demonstrators clashed with them. Bottles and stones were thrown during the clashes.  The neo-Nazi supporters held a banner reading 'I regret nothing' as they marched, waving the red-white-and-black flag of the pre-World War I German monarchy (the red and white Swastika flag of the Nazi era is banned in Germany.) They were protected by police in riot gear as they chanted and marched in the streets.

#INDIA: Gov't Considers Sweeping New Data Privacy Law Based on European Union's #GDPR

The government is considering a sweeping data privacy law which would mean significant changes for foreign companies doing business in India. The Personal Data Protection Bill was prompted in part by a landmark decision by the Supreme Court of India last year calling privacy a “fundamental right” under the Indian Constitution and calling on the Indian government to develop a comprehensive data protection law. The bill is closely modeled after the European Union’s General Data Protection Regulation (“GDPR”). Key provisions include granting four key rights:  (1) the right to confirm whether and how their data is being used; (2) the ability to correct misleading or false data; (3) data portability, and (4) a “right to be forgotten," or the authority to restrict companies from using data they previously shared.

The chair of the African National Congress is on record as saying the government should take land from those who own more than 3,000 acres of land. The Rand, South Africa's currency, fell on financial markets after ANC chair Gwede Mantashe, an ally of President Cyril Ramaphosa, said this week that major landowners should have their land taken without compensation. Ramaphosa, for his part, has publicly denied the existence of the list.

#USA: New Mexico Land Commissioner Halts Discussion With Feds Over State Land Near Proposed Border Wall

New Mexico's State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn says he has ended negotiations with the Federal Government to settle a dispute over a piece of state trust land along the border with Mexico. The Federal Government already has constructed a fence as well as a road at the property, but Dunn, who this year switched from Republican to Libertarian, said the Feds do not have a right of way to use the state trust land, and is holding out for more than $54,000 from them to use the land. It has offered just over $8,700. For now, he's placed a "No Trespassing" sign on the state trust land.

#MEXICO: Newly Elected Congresswoman Kidnapped

A newly elected Mexican Congresswoman, Norma Azucena Rodríguez Zamora, has been kidnapped at gunpoint on a highway in central Hidalgo state. Two men shot at Rodríguez's car, injuring an assistant and the driver and causing the vehicle to flip over. The gunmen pulled Ms Rodríguez from the car and forced her into their vehicle.
