#NORWAY: New Health Minister Says Gov't Shouldn't Tell Citizens Not To Smoke, Drink Alcohol, Eat Red Meat

Norway's new cabinet minister for Public Health, Sylvi Listhaug, is causing controversy for saying that there's nothing wrong with eating red meat, smoking and drinking alcohol. At least her office won't be lecturing citizens to avoid such things.

An admitted "occasional" smoker herself, Listhaug hails from the Norwegian Progress Party, which is focused on civil liberties, individualism, and limited government. Which makes her "hands off" approach unsurprising.

In an interview, Listhaug said: "I think many smokers feel repressed. They almost feel they have to hide away, and I think that’s stupid. Although smoking is not good and it is harmful, adults have to decide for themselves what they do. The only thing we as governments are to do is to provide information."

#AUSTRALIA: Tasmania Labor Party Wants To Raise Legal Age To Purchase Tobacco Products To 25

The Tasmanian state's Labor Party will consider a motion to ban the sale of cigarettes to thoe under 25 at its conference next month. Labor members living in the Kingborough municipality will seek support for its motion to raise the age that tobacco products may be sold to 25 and "to regulate the content and engineering of tobacco products – including filters and additives." Issues as diverse as puppy farming, housing, recycling, seat belts on buses, and a motion to allow members to elect the parliamentary leader are among the issues to be debated during the meeting, which will be held on Sept. 8 and 9.

A bill to increase the age restriction on tobacco products in Hawaii is headed to the governor. Senate Bill 1030 would make it illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to sell, possess, consume or purchase tobacco products or electric smoking devices in Hawaii. It would take effect on Jan. 1, 2016.

#THENETHERLANDS: Smoking Ban Fines Raised 1.4 million Euros For Gov't From Cafe, Bar Owners [world politics news]

Health inspectors handed out 1,578 fines to Dutch cafe, bar and club owners for breaking the ban on smoking in 2014. This is a rise of just under 200 on 2013. In total, inspectors levied fines totaling €1.4 million. The smoking ban went into effect in 2008.

#UK: Parliament Approves Plain Packaging For Cigarettes By Next Year

Parliament has voted to introduce plain cigarette packaging to England starting in May, 2016. England will be the third country to introduce such a law after Australia and Ireland. The law applies only to England, but the UK's other self-governing regions may follow suit.
