CANADA: Alberta AG Says No prosecutions Under Federal Gun Ban

Alberta Attorney General Tyler Shandro issued a stern notice to the Trudeau Liberals, announcing the province is seizing back constitutional power from the feds to protect legal gun-owners from being persecuted under Bill C-21.

“Albertans have had enough. So today we are taking action,” Shandro said.

“First, as Alberta’s attorney general, I have directed that the Alberta crown prosecution service takeover the handling of charges involving the Firearms Act starting January 1st 2023.”

He said as things currently stand, the federal government handles these matters. 

Shandro’s announcement Thursday effectively protects legal gun owners from suddenly becoming criminals if Bill C-21 comes into force.

#CANADA: PM Trudeau Swears In A Second "Gender-Balanced" Cabinet; First Deputy PM Since 2006

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced and swore in his new cabinet yesterday in Ottawa, and just as in 2015, he ensured it was "gender-balanced," with 50% female ministers. Media noted that it was a more subdued ceremony than 2015's, likely to to the fact that Trudeau's government holds a minority of seats in Parliament, hence, is a "minority government."

Foreign Affairs Minster Chrystia Freeland has moved to serving as Minister for Intergovernmental Affairs in this new cabinet, while also serving as Deputy Prime Minister, a position he revived after it was eliminated in 2006.

It is believed the Alberta-born Freeland will use her post at Intergovernmental Affairs to sooth ongoing tensions in Alberta and other western provinces, which have increasingly felt alienated from the Federal government, which is seen as catering more to eastern provinces.

Environment and Climate Change Minister Catherine McKenna will be removed from that ministerial role and replaced by Fisheries and Coast Guard Minister Jonathan Wilkinson. McKenna will take on the role of Minister of Infrastructure and Communities.

#USA: New Mexico Land Commissioner Halts Discussion With Feds Over State Land Near Proposed Border Wall

New Mexico's State Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn says he has ended negotiations with the Federal Government to settle a dispute over a piece of state trust land along the border with Mexico. The Federal Government already has constructed a fence as well as a road at the property, but Dunn, who this year switched from Republican to Libertarian, said the Feds do not have a right of way to use the state trust land, and is holding out for more than $54,000 from them to use the land. It has offered just over $8,700. For now, he's placed a "No Trespassing" sign on the state trust land.
