#CANADA: Calgary Plans Taking $20 Million From Police Budget

Shifting $20 million from the Calgary police budget to address gaps in crisis and outreach services will be on the table during city council’s budget deliberations later this month.

The council approved a motion earlier this month that asks city officials to bring information about reallocating $10 million of Calgary Police Service funding in both 2021 and 2022 for a new “community safety investment framework.”

#CANADA: A Tradition Since 1980, Edmonton, Alberta Pride Parade Cancelled After Racial Justice Groups Make Financial Demands

The Annual Pride Parade in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada was canceled after two groups demanded tens of thousands of dollars from the organizers, and the creation of seminars on climate change and racial oppression. Unable to fully comply with the demands set forth by two opposing groups - RaricaNow and Shades of Colour Edmonton - the board of the Edmonton Pride Festival released a statement advising that the entirety of the LGBT-centric events, a tradition in the community since 1980, would be cancelled.

Two members of the organizing group told The Edmonton Journal that "a number of demands couldn't be approved because they would fundamentally change the structure and the mission of the society while jeopardizing its not-for-profit status."

The organizers had in previous years disinvited police and military participants in the parade, along with conservative politicians who wanted to march with them. Last year's parade route was physically blocked by protesters upset with a lack of of focus on racial justice issues.

Six left-wing extremists have been arrested at the Arendalsuka ("Arendal Week") political festival accused of plotting attacks on two populist parties, Stop Islamization of Norway (SIAN) and Alliance. Among the plotters arrested was the leader of a Communist group which had encouraged activists to disrupt the event The annual festival, held in the city of the southeastern city of Arendal, "is an annual national forum where delegates from politics, NGOs, industry and the public meet to debate and develop politics for the present and the future," says the event's website.

Włodzimierz Czarzasty, 55, has taken the reins of the Democratic Left Alliance after last year's disastrous fall election. He beat challenger Jerzy Wenderlich by 428 votes to 327 during the SLD party congress. The October 25 general election was a disaster for the Polish left, and currently SLD does not have a single MP in the lower house of parliament.
