#CANADA: Conservatives Set June 27 For Leadership Election

[world politics news]

Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer says he wants to resign following his party's drubbing at the polls last year, but the party will take six months to choose his replacement which is being billed as a "quick" transition by party leaders.

The Conservative Party will select its new leader on June 27 in Toronto, says the head of the party's leadership organizing committee.

Dan Nowlan told CBC News that the committee chose that date based on feedback from party members. With a minority Liberal government in office that could fall at any point, "we have an obligation as the opposition party to be ready as quickly as we can," Nowlan said.

#CANADA: Conservatives Call On Trudeau To Resign After Former AG Says He Pressured Her In Criminal Case

[world politics news]

The leader of the Conservative Party opposition, Andrew Scheer, has called on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign after his former attorney general said Trudeau pressured her to make a deal in a criminal case.

Former Attorney General Jody Wilson-Raybould said there were repeated attempts by Trudeau and his office to pressure her to help “find a solution” for SNC-Lavalin, a Montreal-based engineering company facing criminal prosecution. She described calls, meetings, emails and texts from several government offices - including Trudeau’s chief of staff - even after a decision had been made not to offer the company a deferred prosecution agreement.  Scheer said her testimony proves that Trudeau has "lost his authority to govern."

Trudeau rejects her characterization of events, saying he and his office always acted appropriately and professionally. He declined to resign, citing upcoming elections.

#CANADA: Controversial MP Maxime Bernier Leaves "Morally Corrupt" Conservative Party To Form A New Party Of His Own

[world politics news]

Controversial Quebec MP Maxime Bernier has made a scorched-earth exit from the Conservatives, while announcing plans to start his own federal party. Bernier, who represents the riding of Beauce, made the announcement just as the party's policy convention kicked off in Halifax. Bernier has caused waves for recent tweets questioning Canada's policies promoting diversity, which opponents called "xenophobic," and Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer distanced himself from the tweets, a move some called "weak." Scheer narrowly defeated Bernier for the leadership of the Conservative Party last year.

#CANADA: Conservative MP Maxime Bernier Under Fire For His Tweets Against Liberal's "Extreme Multiculturalism," "Victimhood"

[world politics news]

Conservative MP Maxime Bernier of Quebec has come under fire for accusing the governing Liberal Party of pursuing a policy of "extreme multiculturalism" and the "cult of victimhood." He made the accusation in a series of tweets that have been attacked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as being "divisive." Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer - who narrowly defeated Bernier to leader the party last year - coldly said Bernier "speaks for himself" and refused to say whether he'd remove him from his party positions. Bernier was dumped from the party's shadow cabinet earlier this year after clashing with Scheer.
