#GERMANY: Social Democrat Leader Scholz Holds Lead After Strong Debate Performance

[world politics news]

Who will succeed Angela Merkel as Germany's chancellor? The candidates to become Germany’s next leader faced off in a TV debate, and Social Democrat Olaf Scholz produced a solid performance to maintain his hold as the front-runner.

Early snap polls suggested that Scholz did enough in the three-way debate to maintain a slim but solid lead over his rivals in the final debate of the election campaign.

Just moments after the 90-minute debate ended on Germany's public broadcasters, an Infratest dimap poll found that 41% of the 1,500 viewers asked found Scholz the most convincing, a long way ahead of the Christian Democratic Union's (CDU) candidate Armin Laschet and the Green party's Annalena Baerbock, on 27% and 25% respectively.

#UK: Poll Shows London Mayor Handily Winning Re-election

[world politics news]

London Mayor Sadiq Khan is coasting towards a clear victory in the battle for re-election against Conservative challenger Shaun Bailey, an exclusive new poll shows today.

The sitting Labour mayor is ahead of his Conservative rival by 47% to 26% with a month to g in the campaign, the YouGov research for the Mile End Institute (MEI) revealed.

But two minor candidates have picked up support from standing starts.

Laurence Fox, the actor and activist running for mayor for the new Reclaim Party, has overtaken other minor candidates to notch up to 4% after just four weeks of campaigning.

Former Wall Street banker Brian Rose, whose social media videos and animated billboards have grabbed attention, is just behind him at 3%.

But the pair are lagging behind Green Party candidate Sian Berry, in third place with 9%, and Liberal Democrat Luisa Porritt, who comes in fourth at 7%.

#FRANCE: Poll Shows Right-Wing Candidate Marine Le Pen Within 4 Points Of Pres. Macron

[world politics news]

A new Harris Interactive poll for the 2022 French Presidential election shows that, in a run-off between the incumbent President Emmanuel Macron and nationalist opponent Marine Le Pen, Macron would receive 52% of the vote.

This is the lowest number from Macron that's ever been recorded by a pollster.

Macron has had historically bad poll numbers for years, though. His handling of the "Yellow jacket" protests and his conservative economic reforms were largely to blame.

Le Pen has served as president of the National Rally political party (previously named National Front) since 2011. She has been the member of the National Assembly for Pas-de-Calais's 11th constituency since June, 2017.

In 2012, she placed third in the presidential election with 17.90% of the vote, behind François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy.

She launched a second bid to become President of France at the 2017 presidential election. She finished second in the first round of the election, with 21.30% of the vote, and faced Emmanuel Macron of centrist party En Marche! in the second round of voting. On May 7, 2017, she conceded after receiving approximately 33.9% of the vote in the second round.

She is the daughter of former National Front leader Jean-Marie Le Pen, who headed the party for nearly 40 years, and who also sought the presidency repeatedly.

She has sought to distance herself from his more controversial positions and statements, which opponents characterized as anti-Semitic and racist.

#POLAND: Former EU Pres. Tusk Will Boycott Election; Incumbent Duda Is Likely Winner

[world politics news]

Former European Council president Donald Tusk is appealing for a boycott of the upcoming presidential election in his native Poland, saying the postal vote the government has proposed carries health risks amid the coronavirus pandemic and would not meet democratic standards for free, equal and transparent elections.

Tusk, who served as Poland’s prime minister from 2007 to 2014, said in a video on Twitter that he would not “not take part in the voting procedure" for the May 10 balloting. He said the vote promoted by the right-leaning ruling party “has nothing to do with an election.”

According to the latest election poll conducted by Statista in April 2020, the current President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, has the highest chance of winning next year's presidential election. The poll estimates that he may count on 59% of votes.

#UK: Poll Shows Johnson's Conservatives Ahead; Labour Being Dragged Down By Leader Corbyn

[world politics news]

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is on course to win a Parliamentary majority in the December 12th national election which would give him the leeway he needs to get his Brexit deal through the House of Commons, a pollster has predicted.

Chris Hopkins, head of politics at ComRes, made his remarks after the publication of its latest Voting Intention poll, suggesting Johnson’s Conservative Party currently enjoys an eight point lead over Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, a fact he attributed partly retaining the Leave vote better than Labour was managing to retain the Remain vote. Hopkins added negative perceptions of Corbyn himself appear to be hampering his party’s chances - with significantly more people saying they would like to have Christmas dinner with the prime minister.

[world politics news]

A large number of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party’s (SNS) voters are pensioners, poor and those with low education or with high school degrees, according to the poll conducted by Birodi. The results of the research have provoked harsh reactions by SNS officials, including its leader and Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic.

The poll has also showed that those who vote for SNS regularly watch the television networks Pink and Happy, which are widely regarded as ruling party’s propaganda tools.

In his op-ed for Politika daily, Vucic said the poll is part of a campaign, “in which is Serbia is being insulted, degraded and its citizens labeled as third-grade losers." The head of SNS parliamentary group Aleksandar Martinovic (photo) has called on the prosecutor’s office to intervene, claiming that Birodi poll was “dangerous phenomena”
