#NEPAL: Parliament Approves New Map, Claiming Territory Disputed With India

Nepal’s Parliament has approved a new map of the country, that includes areas disputed with India, with India's government rejecting the changes, saying that the addition of Indian territory was not based on historical facts or evidence. The move signals a hardening of Nepal’s position over a decades-long border dispute that has strained ties between the South Asian neighbors.

The revised map was approved by 258 out of 275 members of parliament, exceeding the required two-thirds majority. There were no votes against.

The map must also be passed by the National Assembly, the parliament’s upper chamber, and approved by President Bidhya Devi Bhandari before it becomes a part of the constitution.

#NEPAL: New Law Seeks To Stop Christian Conversions; Protects Against "Hurting Religious Feelings"

A law criminalizing religious conversions and the "hurting of religious feelings" has gone into effect in Nepal, a year after the bill was passed. Nepal's Christian minority fears the new law will be abused by those seeking to settle scores, as has happened frequently in neighboring India. Nepal’s 2007 interim Constitution declared the country a secular state that maintained neutrality in religious affairs. That language was included in the 2015 Constitution, despite protests from Hindu nationalists, who wanted a return to Hindu statehood and who continue to protest over the word “secular” – a word they say is inappropriately adopted from the West.

Nepal's Prime Minister K.P. Oli has resigned, nine months after coming to power and minutes before parliament was to vote on a no confidence motion he was likely to lose. Oli's departure plunges the Himalyan country, plagued by political turmoil for years, into a whole new round of political uncertainty. This is the country's 23rd government to fall since a multi-party democracy began in 1990 after bloody protests, and the political tumult has weighed on business confidence.
