#UGANDA: Gov't Official Says Starved People Were "Idiots"

A Ugandan government minister is facing criticism after calling those who have died of hunger in his country "idiots".

Many have deemed Henry Okello Oryem's comments tone-deaf.

In 2022, more than 2,200 people died of starvation and related illnesses in northeast Uganda, a report by an official human rights body said.

#CANADA: Federal Court Rules Against Trudeau

In a long-awaited decision, Canada's Federal Court has ruled that the measures Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked under the Emergencies Act were unreasonable and unconstitutional.

The decision follows an application for judicial review launched by the Canadian Constitution Foundation, the Canadian Civil Liberties Association, and several other applicants in 2022 after the emergency measures were used to end the Freedom Convoy protests in Ottawa.

EU: Carmaker Stellantis Flexible On EVs

At international carmaker Stellantis, new large vehicle underpinnings announced Friday illustrate he company’s ability to adjust to European and U.S. government electric vehicle requirements that could change depending on this year’s elections. Large vehicles could be converted to gas- electric hybrids or internal combustion engines.

That flexibility is important, he said, because policies promoting EVs as a way to fight climate change could be rescinded depending on who is elected U.S. president or to European parliaments this year.

#GERMANY: Parliament Approves Dual Citizenship

German lawmakers have voted in favor of changing the law, which would open up the possibility of dual citizenship to swaths of the population. The bill would also reduce the time needed to qualify for naturalization.

Parliament voted 382-234 for the plan put forward by center-left Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s socially liberal coalition, with 23 lawmakers abstaining. The main center-right opposition bloc criticized the project vehemently, arguing that it would cheapen German citizenship.

NORWAY: Lawmakers Open Arctic Sea To Deep SeaMining

The Norwegian parliament has voted in favor of commercial plans to open the Arctic Ocean to seabed mineral exploration, Mining.com has reported. The controversial vote, which was won 80 to 30, was opposed by Environmental groups, who argued it put sea life in danger. Thus makes Norway the first nation to endorse commercial deep sea mining.

#SAUDIARABIA: Saudi Amb. To UK: After Palestinian State, Peace With Israel

Saudi Arabia is interested in normalizing diplomatic relations with Israel following the conclusion of the Israel's war on Hamas in Gaza (in retaliation for Hamas' attack on Isreal October 7) the Saudi ambassador to the UK, Khalid bin Bandar Al Saud, said in an interview with the BBC.

However, the envoy said, Saudi Arabia had one condition - the creation of a Palestinian State.

ITALY: Investment, Not Charity, For Africa Says Meloni

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni told her EU partners that curbing migration from African countries has less to do with offers of charity than strong partnerships coupled with strategic investments in those nations.

Meloni told reporters at a year-end news conference that last month's deal on the EU's Migration and Asylum Pact partially improved the situation for Italy and other asylum countries, but does not represent a solution to increasing migrant arrivals.

“What needs to be done in Africa is not charity,” the Italian prime minister said. “What needs to be done in Africa is to build cooperation and serious strategic relationships as equals, not predators.”

#SOUTHKOREA: Opposition Leader Stabbed

 The leader of South Korea's political opposition was stabbed at a news conference in the southern port city of Busan, Yonhap news agency reports.

Lee Jae-myung, who narrowly lost the presidential elections in 2022, was stabbed on the left side of his neck on Tuesday morning.
The attacker was arrested at the scene.
