#RUSSIA: Duma Member Claims Wagner May Start War In North

[world politics news]

According to Andrey Kartapolov, a Russian politician and former army officer, the relocation of the Wagner group to Belarus positions Russia in a favourable position to swiftly target NATO assets near Poland and Lithuania.

Kartapolov mentioned in a statement to Russian state television that the private military company has the capability to strike the border region of Poland and Lithuania within a short span of "a matter of hours" from its newly established base.

After an unsuccessful uprising led by its leader Yevgeny Prigozhin last month, the mercenary group, Wagner, is said to have relocated to Belarus. In the aftermath of the brief mutiny against Russian President Vladimir Putin, an agreement was reached between the two parties. As part of the deal, Yevgeny Prigozhin accepted exile in Belarus, where Wagner fighters have started to gather and join him, according to reports.

Belarus occupies a crucial geopolitical position at the intersection of Europe, sharing borders with NATO member countries like Poland, Lithuania, and Latvia, as well as neighbouring Ukraine.

"Should anything happen, we need this Suwalki Corridor very much," Andrey Kartapolov said during his TV appearance, adding, "A strike force [based in Wagner forces in Belarus] is ready to take this corridor in a matter of hours."

According to Rebekah Koffler, a former DIA intelligence officer, the relocation of the Wagner group to Belarus may be a component of Vladimir Putin's strategy to create a new front in the ongoing Ukraine war.

“The repositioning of the Wagner Group was part of Putin’s plan to open the second front in Belarus, which is now in possession of tactical nuclear weapons. Putin -- under the guise of the so-called 'Prigozhin coup' -- placed Wagner, his best fighting force, in a much more threatening position: within striking distance of both Kyiv, Ukraine and NATO’s border - Latvia, Lithuania," Rebekah Koffler said.

Rebekah Koffler continued, “Russia's General Staff that does long-term forecasting, assessed a decade ago that a direct war between Russia and the US/NATO is ‘inevitable’. Moscow is interpreting every US and NATO move within that prism. Whatever Biden’s rationale is for this recent deployment, to Putin it means the US is ready to jump in the fight."

“Putin will not wait for the US to strike first. If Russian intelligence assesses that US/NATO forces are about to join the fight, Putin will likely do what Kartapolov warns about," he added.

#UKRAINE: Zelinsky Calls On NATO To Admit Ukraine To Alliance

[world politics news]

Ukraine’s president says his country is submitting an “accelerated” application to join the NATO military alliance. But   ascension to NATO would require the unanimous support of the alliance’s members, including Turkey and Hungary, which have both refused military aid to the country.

"De facto, we have already become a NATO ally," President Volodymyr Zelensky said in a video address on Sept. 30. "We trust each other, we help each other, and we protect each other. This is the Alliance,"

The comment by Zelenskyy came after Russian President Vladimir Putin signed treaties to annex parts of Ukraine in defiance of international law, saying Moscow would protect the newly incorporated regions by “all available means.”

#FINLAND: Parliament To Debate NATO Membership

[world politics news]

Finnish MPs will debate how to handle a petition calling for a vote on NATO membership on Tuesday as a poll showed a historic change in attitude in the traditionally non-aligned country after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Prime Minister Sanna Marin said in a Twitter post Monday evening that a planned debate in parliament the following day would cover the situation in Ukraine and was not intended as a "wider conversation on Finland's policy regarding military alignment or non-alignment".

But she added that since a citizen's petition requesting a parliament debate on a referendum had reached the necessary 50,000 signatories to trigger a debate in Parliament.

Russia has recently threatened both Finland and Sweden with consequences if it aligned itself with the West following the invasion. Such threats, ironically, have seemingly quickly moved public opinion towards a NATO alliance.

#LITHUANIA: Baltic Nations Fear They're Next To Be Invaded

[world politics news]

The Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania have called for additional NATO forces to bolster their security as Russia invades Ukraine and tightens its grip on neighboring Belarus.

The small European Union states, whose combined population is similar to that of the island of Ireland, have called for years for a harder line to be taken to deter the Kremlin.

Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis tweeted Thursday:

"We in Lithuania know it very well that Ukraine is fighting not just for Ukraine, but for us in the region, Europe and everyone in the democratic world. It is our obligation not just to punish Russia for its actions but to help Ukraine with all and every means available. Now."

#FRANCE: Submarine Deal Signed Between France And Greece

[world politics news]

Greece and France have signed a $5 billion deal for Athens to buy at least four French-made warships. French and American contractors had been in a bidding war since 2019, when Greece announced it was looking to buy half a dozen naval attack vessels. For French President Emmanuel Macron, it was a much-needed win after the recent AUKUS debacle, when the US froze Paris out of a security pact with Australia and the UK, nixing a contract for Australia to buy French submarines.

Macron and Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis touted the deal as a move towards European "strategic autonomy" (since coming to power in 2017, Macron has been a strong advocate of Europe pursuing a defense strategy independent from the US).

Greece, for its part, has also been looking to boost its own military capabilities amid deteriorating relations with longtime foe Turkey over competing maritime claims in the Eastern Mediterranean.

It should be noted that despite the traditional hostility between Greece and Turkey, both are members of NATO, the military alliance that supposedly works together on military matters. This deal is a significant departure from that alliance, and NATO officials have expressed their concern and dismay over the deal.

#TURKEY: Pres. Erdogan Likely Seeking Nuclear Weapons, Pakistan Helping

[world politics news]

Reports suggest that Turkey's president is eager to obtain nuclear weapons, and there are indications that Pakistan is eager to help them do so.

The reports will likely take many politicians in Europe and North America by surprise, because it has not been widely reported in the western media.

Late last year, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke of his frustration at not having a nuclear arsenal.

“Several countries have missiles with nuclear warheads, not one or two. But [they tell us that] we can’t have them. This I cannot accept,” Erdogan said on the centennial of the Turkish independence movement in October. “There is no developed nation in the world that doesn’t have them.”

In fact, many developed countries do not have nuclear weapons. Only nine countries - the United States, Russia, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan, North Korea, and Israel - possess nuclear weapons, with Washington and Moscow owning 93% of them.

Erdogan is also on record as saying that he resents the fact that regional neighbor Israel has nuclear weapons.

Turkey has likely been watching North Korea's nuclear program with great interest as well, wondering why the international community has been tolerating that nations development of nuclear weapons.

High-level talks between Turkey and Pakistan occurred late last year, and reports indicated that the topic of those meetings was primarily the obtaining of nuclear weapons.

The United States and others have reminded the NATO nation that it is a signatory to the non-proliferation agreement, which attempts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

[world politics news]

Poland wants a permanent U.S. military presence — and is willing to pony up as much as $2 billion to get it, according to a defense ministry proposal obtained by Polish news portal Onet. The Polish offer reflects a long-standing desire in Warsaw to build closer security relations with the U.S. and put American boots on the ground. The push dates back to Poland’s entry into NATO in 1999, but has taken on added urgency in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea region four years ago and aggressive posture toward the alliance.
