MEXICO: Pres. Warns Trump On Tariffs

[world politics news]

l

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Tuesday she would seek dialogue and cooperation with President-elect Donald Trump following his renewed threat to impose a 25 percent tariff on goods from both Canada and Mexico over illegal immigration and drugs.

Throughout the 2024 presidential campaign, Trump threatened to issue a 25 percent tariff on goods coming from Mexico if it did not comply with his demands on curbing illegal immigration. On Monday, he warned Mexico and Canada that he would quickly impose tariffs on imports unless they cracked down on illegal immigrants as well as fentanyl and other drugs coming across their respective borders into the United States.

Responding to the president-elect’s latest warning, Sheinbaum suggested that Mexico would respond with a retaliatory tariff against the United States.

EU: Bloc Will Impose Tariffs on Chinese EV imports

[world politics news]

Big taxes will be imposed on imports of electric vehicles from China to the EU after the majority of member states have backed the plans.

The move to introduce tariffs aims to protect the European car industry from being undermined by what EU politicians believe are unfair Chinese-state subsidies on its own cars.

Charges of up to 45% are to be enforced on electric cars made in China for the next five years, but some fear the move could raise electric vehicle (EV) prices for buyers.

#LITHUANIA: China Blocking Goods With Lithuanian Parts Over Taiwan Embassy

[world politics news]

The European Union says China is blocking imports from European Union countries when they contain components from Lithuania.

A European official says there have been many cases where imports from Lithuania and the EU are blocked in Chinese ports.

"Apparently, Chinese customs refuse to clear goods from other EU countries if they contain parts from Lithuania," said
EU Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis.

The dispute is occurring because Lithuania opened an consulate in the capital, Vilnius, for the island of Taiwan in July. China claims the island as part of the mainland Communist Chinese Nation.

#CHINA: State-Run Media Calls Australia "Gangsters" As Trade War Flares Up

[world politics news]

China has accused Australia of being part of an “axis of white supremacy” because of our intelligence alliance with Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States.

In its state-run media mouthpiece – the Global Times – Beijing said the alliance, known as Five Eyes, was taking co-ordinated action against China.

“They have formed a US-centred, racist, and mafia-styled community, wilfully and arrogantly provoking China and trying to consolidate their hegemony as all gangsters do,” the tabloid wrote.

“They are becoming a racist axis aimed at stifling the development rights of 1.4 billion Chinese.”

#SOUTHKOREA: Pres. Moon Jae-in Offers Olive Branch In Trade Talks

[world politics news]

South Korean President Moon Jae-in offered an olive branch to Japan to end an ongoing trade dispute Thursday, saying Seoul will "gladly join hands" if Japan wants to talk.

Moon's government has been accusing Japan of weaponizing trade to target its export-dependent economy and retaliate against South Korean court rulings calling for Japanese companies to offer reparations to South Koreans forced into labor during World War II. Tokyo's measures struck a nerve in South Korea, where many still harbor resentment over Japan's ruthless colonial rule from 1910 to 1945.

After threatening stern countermeasures and declaring that South Korea would "never lose" to Japan again, Moon has taken a more conciliatory tone over the past week as there was relief in Seoul that the impact of Japan's trade measures might not be as bad as initially thought.

#SOUTHKOREA: National Assembly Urges Japan To Withdraw Export Restrictions As Trade Dispute Widens

[world politics news]

South Korea's National Assembly has sent Japan a parliamentary resolution calling on Tokyo to withdraw its export curbs on the neighboring country, as a trade dispute between the two nations escalates.

The resolution was adopted unanimously Friday, hours after Japan's Cabinet approved a bill which would remove South Korea from a list of trusted trade partners. The move followed its July 4 restriction of exports to South Korea of high-tech materials vital in making chips and displays.

#RUSSIA: PM Medvedev Warns Of "Economic War" Between US & Russia If Sanctions Legislation Is Passed

[world politics news]

Russia has warned the United States it will regard any US move to curb the activities of its banks as a declaration of economic war which it would retaliate against, stepping up a war of words with Washington over spiraling sanctions. The warning, from Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, reflects Russian fears over the impact of new restrictions on its economy and assets, including the ruble. Moscow's strategy of trying to improve battered US-Russia ties by attempting to build bridges with Pres. Trump is backfiring after US lawmakers launched a new sanctions drive earlier this month because they fear Trump is too soft on Russia.
