Alberta United Conservative Party leadership candidate Rebecca Schulz sent supporters an email pretending to be a New Democratic Party supporter begging Conservatives not to vote for Schulz because the NDP are "afraid of her."

UCP members on Schulz’s mailing list received an email from “Your Friendly Neighbourhood NDP Supporter” with the subject “The NDP’s Worst Nightmare.” The actual email address listed is clearly from Schulz' campaign, however.

Canada’s Conservative Party has chosen a populist career politician to be its next leader, betting on Pierre Poilievre to take on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s Liberals after a series of electoral defeats.

Poilievre’s victory was a foregone conclusion for months, as most opinion polls ahead of the party convention on Saturday night showed his firebrand political rhetoric resonated with members – and gave him a comfortable lead over his closest rival, the more centrist Jean Charest.

A constitutional rights group has blasted the federal government’s plan to create a Digital ID infrastructure as a threat to Charter rights and a step towards implementing a Communist China-style social credit system. 

In the report titled Canada’s Road to Beijing, the Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms (JCCF) outlines how China’s mass surveillance system operates and in what ways a national Digital ID system is a step towards authoritarianism.

#CANADA: Alberta Firearms Officer Blasts Trudeau Handgun Ban

Albert's Chief Firearms Officer, Teri Bryant, says the Trudeau government’s ban on importing legal handguns will have no impact on crime. 

The federal government announced last week that handguns for the civilian market will be barred from importation as of August 19, a directive issued without the oversight of Parliament.

#CANADA: Journalist Suggests Conservative MP Be "Shot" Like a Lame Horse

Journalist Dale Smith, an official member of the Parliamentary Press Gallery which grants exclusive access privileges to the best-of-the-best Canadian and international journalists in the House of Commons, appears to have drawn a direct line between a question posed today by MP Garnett Genuis and shooting an animal.

Smith tweeted, "Genuis tries to includes lyrics from “Bohemian Rhapsody” in his question, and I cannot adequately tell you how lame it is. When horses are this lame, you shoot them.

Former Conservative Party leader Andrew Scheer tweeted in response, "Dale, you are using a violent metaphor invoking an image of shooting someone you disagree with. You are a member of the parliamentary press gallery. If a Conservative MP did something like this, you would be the first to demand their resignation. You are a complete hypocrite." 

Current Party Chairman Pierre Poilievre tweeted, 

"So a member of the press gallery tweets that a Conservative MP should be shot. Where is the outrage? Have the Prime Minister or journalists condemned this incitement to violence?"

#CANADA: Trucker Convoy Organizer Granted Bail, Banned From Social Media

Pat King, an organizer of the “Freedom Convoy” that paralyzed downtown Ottawa for three weeks last winter, but also galvanized opposition across Canada to mandatory vaccines, has been granted bail.

As a condition of his release, the Red Deer, Alberta native has been restricted by the court from posting messages on social media sites.

Brampton, Ontario Mayor Patrick Brown, in a bizarre turn of events, has been disqualified from the Conservative Party leadership race.

The party’s Leadership Election Organizing Committee (LEOC) released a statement late Tuesday after a hastily called meeting, claiming grave violations of party rules and the Canada Elections Act by Brown’s campaign. They did not release any details on the allegations and said the party would not be commenting further.

#CANADA: Member pf Parliament Threatened With Expulsion After Refusal To Disclose Vax Status

When the member of parliament for the riding of Yorkton—Melville in Saskatchewan Cathay Wagantall took the decision of finally coming back to Ottawa's Federal parliament building in order to better serve her constituents, the Liberals and NDP in the House of Commons threatened to kick her out of Parliament. Therefore she preemptively decided to leave, before security would need to get involved. Earlier his week, guards at the building could be seen with photos of her, to help identify her and prevent her from entering the building.

After this occurred, she staged a press conference in front of the parliament building (West Block) to explain what the situation was, and what actions had been taken. “There’s no way that any of our public servants are being nearly as efficient as they should be working from home,” she said. 

Wagantall explained that she believes “there are very good reasons why an exemption should be given to a number of Canadians – actually the majority of them. Because there are a lot of reasons why an individual may choose not to get vaccinated.”

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney's decision to resign as leader of the United Conservative Party has set the stage for a tumultuous contest for the job, leading to questions about what's to come. 

Kenney narrowly survived the UCP leadership review last Wednesday, only to announce that he was quitting the top job anyway.

To gasps of surprise from supporters at an invitation-only event in Calgary, Kenney said the 51.4 per cent support he received was not enough to stay on.

#CANADA: Ontario MP Lewis First To Qualify For Conservative Leadership Ballot

Dr. Leslyn Lewis has become the first Conservative Party of Canada leadership candidate to officially when a place on the party's ballot.

The Ontario member of the federal Parliament also ran for the conservative leadership in 2020.

Candidates have until April 19 to enter the race and until April 29 to submit their nomination papers, 500 signatures from members of the party as well as a total of $300,000. That includes a leadership registration fee of $200,000 and a compliance deposit of $100,000.

#CANADA: Fully Vaxxed, Boosted Cabinet Minister Tests Positive For COVID-19

Dominic LeBlanc, the federal minister for Intergovernmental Affairs and the member of Parliament for the New Brunswick riding of Beauséjour, has tested positive for COVID-19.

In a tweet Friday evening, LeBlanc said he tested positive on a rapid test and his symptoms were mild.

“I am fully vaccinated and received two booster doses,” he said. “In keeping with public health guidelines, I will be isolating and working from home.”

#CANADA: New Democrats Enter Three-Year Accord With Liberals To Support It's Majority

New Democratic Party has entered into a confidence-and-supply agreement with the ruling Liberal Party to support its legislation and vote "yes" in any no confidence votes for the next three years, in exchange for Liberals pushing through NDP legislation and programs.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says he would be willing to pull out of the new deal if it doesn't work as planned, but he said that he is confident his party can secure the social programs and other policies Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has promised to implement in their accord.

“We’re not going to let the Liberal government off the hook,” Singh told reporters near Parliament Hill on Tuesday, shortly after details of the Liberal-NDP deal were published.

Despite campaigning in the past two elections with rhetoric that attacked Trudeau as untrustworthy and beholden to corporate interests, Singh said he has faith the Liberals will abide by the deal, which is now a public document that Singh described as a new tool for New Democrats to secure their policy priorities in Canada’s minority Parliament.

Poilievre Calls out Media Coverage Of Trucker Convoy

Conservative MP Pierre Poilievre blasted the “liberal media” for generalizing the Truckers For Freedom convoy as extremists, based on a small number of individuals who have attached themselves to the convoy instead of focusing on the broad issues opposed by the group.

The New Democratic Party of Canada says it is working with the Federal ethics commissioner and intends to file a formal disclosure report on a $1,895 rocking chair given to NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh's wife in exchange for posting about the item on her Instagram account.

On Dec. 10, Singh's wife posted an image of the Grand Jackson Rocker by Canadian furniture company Monte Design on her Instagram account, mentioning the company. The party said Singh would repay the cost of the chair after CBC reported it was given to him and his wife as a gift.

The Shark Tank star, who sought the Conservative Party leader spot in 2017, said he believes diversity and gender parity is important in government, but if elected, he would balance that diversity with competence.

“He has built up a caucus and a cabinet full of incompetent and mediocre leaders because he only listened to the siren call of diversity without even looking at competence.”

In his first cabinet of 30 ministers, Trudeau said he appointed an equal number of men and women “because it’s 2015.”

Senior Liberals and New Democrats are quietly kicking around the idea of reaching a deal that would allow the government to go three years without falling on a confidence vote.

Justin Trudeau and Jagmeet Singh have met secretly to discuss the parliamentary session ahead.

If the NDP, with 25 MPs, agrees to support the government, the Liberals, who have 159 MPs, they would together have 184 MPs, more than enough to avoid defeat in the Commons during a vote of "no confidence."

When such a vote is lost, a new, snap, election is called. Having just held an election in September, all parties are eager to avoid that situation.

#CANADA: Trudeau Re-Elected, Will Lead Minority Gov't

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won a third straight election on Monday, but fell short of the majority they sought in the snap vote and will return to government with what will effectively be a status quo Parliament.

The Liberal victory left Erin O’Toole’s leadership of the Conservative Party in jeopardy. The Tory leader rose to the helm of the party last year promising to deliver in seat-rich Ontario but he struggled in the campaign with questions on how he would handle the pandemic and wavered on key platform pledges.

The People's Party of Maxime Vernier also failed to take off, despite crippling lockdowns that angered many Canadians.

As of Tuesday morning, the Liberals were leading or elected in 158 ridings, the Conservatives were at 119, the Bloc Québécois at 34, the NDP at 25 and the Green Party was at two seats.

#CANADA: Trudeau Defends Calling Election During Pandemic

Responding to critics, Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau said he “absolutely” does not regret calling the federal election during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he pledged to be “ferocious” in the last week of the campaign, as his main competitor, Erin O’Toole, pitched a changed Conservative Party ready to earn voters’ trust.

The leaders began their final bids for votes on Friday, a day after the last leaders’ debate and with just 10 days to the Sept. 20 election.

#CANADA: Ontario Unveils Vaccine Passports For Sept. Rollout

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has announced a vaccine passport program to take effect later this month.  

Beginning Sept. 22, proof of vaccination will be needed for restaurants, bars, gyms and other indoor settings in Ontario where masks cannot be worn for the duration of the visit.

For the first month, proof of vaccination will be the receipt issued when getting vaccinated or downloaded from the government website. Another piece of government identification, such as a driver’s licence, will be required.

#CANADA: Deputy Prime Minister Has Tweet Labelled "Manipulated Media"

A video tweeted by incumbent Liberal candidate Chrystia Freeland, who served as deputy prime minister in Justin Trudeau's government, was given a warning label Sunday from Twitter, which marked it as "manipulated media."

Freeland's tweets, posted in both English and French, contain several edits and show Conservative leader Erin O'Toole answering a question about privatized health care during an online question-and-answer session in July 2020 during the Conservative leadership race.

The tweet shows O'Toole being asked, during his party leadership race, if he would bring private, "for-profit" health care to Canada. He quickly responds: "yes." 

However, in the original recording of O'Toole's remarks on heath care — which can be seen here at about the 12:30 mark — the Conservative leader also noted that "universal access remains paramount."

On Sunday, the party accused the Liberals of spreading misinformation.
