#GHANA: Masked Candidate Leads 2024 Election

Giant billboards featuring a man in a mask and the simple message “leadership for the next generation #thenewforce” have appeared in major cities across Ghana in recent weeks. Other billboards, featuring a masked man flanked by other people with covered faces, have been rolled out as part of the campaign.

The billboards have been placed beside busy streets in major cities such as Accra, Kumasi, Cape Coast, Takoradi, Ho, and Tamale.

#GHANA: Censure Vote Against Finance Minister Fails

A vte of Censure motion against Ghana Finance Minister Ken Ofori Atta has failed after a majority walked out of Parliament. Despite the walk out, the secret vote process still happened on the floor of parliament with all 136 minority lawmakers participating. At the end of the voting process, they secured 136 votes in support of the removal of Atta.

#GHANA: Parliament Will Pass Bill To Criminize Gay Marriage & Gay Rights By 2024 Election

Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin has given the clearest indication that the House will pass the controversial Promotion of Proper Human Sexual Rights and Ghanaian Family Values Bill before the 2024 election.

Bagbin gave the assurance in a media engagement on Friday, October 28, 2022. “Sexual Rights and Human Values bill that is being handled by the Committee, definitely we will pass it before the next election.We will pass it,” he said.

#GHANA: Government Budget Voted Down Over Electronic Tax Proposal

Ghana’s minority lawmakers rejected next year’s budget proposal over a new levy on electronic money transfers after majority members walked out in protest.

The country’s hung parliament had been deliberating the spending plan proposed by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, which introduces a 1.75% levy on digital transactions, including mobile-money payments, which has become an indispensable part of how people pay for goods and services using their phones.

“The e-levy is the cornerstone of this budget,” Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah Bonsu said before the walkout. “Where are we going to get the money to do the roads?”

#GHANA: Opposition Member Of Parliament Says Used Car Ban Will Cost Jobs

A member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) communication team has protested against the ban on the importation of salvaged vehicles into the country.

Daniella Mathias believes the move will render hundreds of thousands of artisans such as local mechanics, sprayers, welders, spare parts dealers and other craftspersons jobless.

She said the activities of artisans businesses within the automotive value chain have over the years contributed hugely to the GDP growth of the country hence the Akufo-Addo government would not be fair if it places ban on their sources of income.

“When he [President Akufo-Addo] was campaigning for votes, he sat 'trotro' [public transport] and begged for the votes of these same people who operate these used vehicles imported into the country,” the vociferous communicator said.

#GHANA: With New Calculation Method, Gov't Statistics Office Prepares To Release Data Showing 40% Higher Growth Estimates

Government officials have told local media that the economy will grow 40% more than previously estimated when it releases its economic in September. Ghana’s $47 billion economy ranks eleventh in Africa after Tanzania, according to IMF estimates for 2017. A 30% expansion will move it up one spot. The statistics office plans to also release second quarter Gross Domestic Product growth in September. The economy expanded 6.8% in the first three months, it said in June. The economy of the cocoa and gold producer expanded by 60 percent in 2010 when the country revised (rebased) the way it viewed its national GDP, leaping into middle-income status.

#GHANA: Parliament Ready To Vote On Creation Of Special Prosecutor's Office

A bill is being readied in Parliament to create an Office of the Special Prosecutor, which backers say will enable the government deal with issues of corruption, especially among state officials. Under the bill, an independent prosecutor will head the office and prosecute corruption offenses by state officers. It was one of the major promises made by Pres. Akufo-Addo as part of his plans to deal with corruption in government. One of the bill's few critics is former Attorney General Martin Amidu, who says a clause limits the number of crimes covered, and future presidents may interfere with the office. Backers say the bill is deliberately limited to prevent overreach.

#GHANA: Deposit Protection Bill Passes Amid Bank, Microfinance Co. Failures

The Parliament in Ghana has passed the Depositors Protection Bill to protect the savings of depositors and also promote confidence in the financial system. The bill became necessary in the wake of the microfinance financial crisis involving DKM Microfinance Company and four other Savings and Loans Companies. The bill requires the establishment of Deposit Protection Fund Corporation where the banks and depositors pay an amount when they deposit their money to the Corporation.
