In a tumultuous intra-party battle lasting a week, the Liberal Party has voted to elect a new leader, Scott Morrison, who has become prime minister, taking the place of Malcolm Turnbull. A social conservative and Evangelical Christian, Morrison has a reputation as a hardworking man of good character. Morrison’s appointment will be seen as a continuation of the Turnbull Government. The weakened party, however, could face calls for an early election.
