#UK: Tax Cut Pledge Blamed For Temporary Pound Collapse

Italian voters rewarded Giorgia Meloni’s euroskeptic Brothers of Italy Party, propelling the country toward what likely would be its first non-Leftist government government since World War II, based on partial results Monday from the election for Parliament.

In a victory speech, Party Leader Giorgia Meloni struck a moderate tone after projections based on votes counted from some two-thirds of polling stations showed her party ahead of other contenders in Sunday’s balloting.

The Elections Office has stressed that because of the pandemic strict hygiene rules should be followed.

Early voting, which started on Monday, is set to finish at 5p.m. on Friday.

Mobile voting, which also got underway on Monday, will continue to be available until the polling stations close on Saturday.

#EU: Ten EU Member States Sold Arms To Russia, Dodging Embargo

#NIGERIA: All Progressives Nominee "Unperturbed" By Bad Poll Numbers

Nigeria's All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council has said the standard-bearer of the party, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, is unperturbed by recent polls, which show him lagging in public support.

The APC Presidential Campaign Council in a statement by its Director of
Media and Publicity, Bayo Onanuga described the polls as "dubious, unrealistic and inconsistent." They show Tinubu trailing behind the Labour Party's Peter Obi 21% to 13%. The national election will be held next February. 

A former governor and senator, Bola Tinubu, 70, became the All Progressives Congress nominee in June.

Alberta United Conservative Party leadership candidate Rebecca Schulz sent supporters an email pretending to be a New Democratic Party supporter begging Conservatives not to vote for Schulz because the NDP are "afraid of her."
UCP members on Schulz’s mailing list received an email from “Your Friendly Neighbourhood NDP Supporter” with the subject “The NDP’s Worst Nightmare.” The actual email address listed is clearly from Schulz' campaign, however.

#EU: Hungary Is "Not A Democracy" Says Euro Parliament

Hungary can no longer be considered a full democracy, the European parliament has said in a powerful symbolic vote against Viktor Orbán’s government.

In a resolution backed by 81% of MEPs present to vote, the parliament stated that Hungary had become a “hybrid regime of electoral autocracy”, citing a breakdown in democracy, fundamental rights and the rule of law.

#SOUTHKOREA: Agency Fines Google, Facebook $72 Million For Privacy Violations

South Korea’s Personal Information and Protection Commission said it fined Google $50 million and Facebook $22 million for illegally tracking their users’ online behavior without their consent.

The combined $72 million fine was the largest penalty ever levied in South Korea for privacy violations, according to the agency.

#SWEDEN: Right-Wing Bloc Wins Election, PM Resigns

The leader of Sweden’s incumbent Social Democrats has resigned as prime minister after conceding defeat in the country’s knife-edge election, handing victory to a loose bloc of rightwing parties that includes the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD).

The PM, Magdalena Andersson, called a press conference at which she accepted defeat, while pointing out that her Social Democrats remained Sweden’s largest party with more than 30% of the vote – and that the majority in parliament for the right bloc was very slim.

#CANADA: Quebec MP Leaves Conservatives Over New Party Leader's "Leadership Style"

Alain Rayes, the MP for the Quebec riding of Richmond–Arthabaska, said Tuesday he is leaving the Conservative Party to sit as an Independent. Rayes cited a clash of values with new conservative party leader Pierre Poilievre's leadership style. 

Rayes had backed Jean Charest in the leadership contest that ended last week. Charest came in a distant second in the contest.

#EU: Parliament Passes Tougher Deforestation Law

The European Parliament has voted for a stricter deforestation law to help better protect the world’s forests. The law aims to ensure that agricultural products sold in Europe are free of deforestation and human rights violations. Companies will be required to guarantee that the products they sell in Europe are not driving deforestation or human rights abuses. 

The Parliament voted to strengthen the initial draft law prepared by the European Commission, particularly by widening the scope of commodities to include natural rubber, maize and leather; extending the definition of “forests” to include other wooded lands (such as the Cerrado savannah in Brazil); and ensuring companies undertake due diligence with regards to upholding human rights and Indigenous peoples’ rights in their supply chains.

#KUWAIT: 376 Candidates Seek 50 Parliament Seats

Solomon Islands politicians have voted to delay national elections until 2024, after the Pacific Games.

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare has argued that the country does not have the resources to stage both the Pacific Games and a general election in the same year - and Parliament has now agreed.

The country will be able to "proudly host the Pacific Games 2023 and carry out its electoral reforms" because of the legislation, Sogavare has claimed

#UKRAINE: Member Of Parliament Expelled From Ruling Party Over Bribery Scandal

Oleksandr Trukhin, a lawmaker from the governing President Volodymyr Zelensky’s Servant of the People faction, was kicked out of the party after a journalistic investigation exposed his attempts to bribe police officers at a car crash site.

The party announced the decision to expel Trukhin on Feb. 2, a day after the Ukrainska Pravda’s investigation was published. Now the party will also consider expelling Trukhin from the party's parliament faction, that including 242 members of parliament. However, even if he is expelled, Trukhin won't lose his seat in parliament.

Iraq's top court ruled Wednesday that it does not have the legal right to dissolve parliament, a much anticipated decision that raises the stakes in the country's unprecedented 11-month political crisis.

The ruling by the Supreme Federal Court states the court does not have the authority under Iraq's constitution to dissolve the legislature, which was a key demand by influential Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr.

Liz Truss Is The New UK Prime Minister

Liz Truss will be the new UK prime minister after defeating Rishi Sunak in the Conservative Party leadership contest. She takes over for Boris Johnson, who of late has been mired in scandal and controversy, prompting the leadership contest.

Priti Patel resigns as home secretary, with Attorney General Suella Braverman tipped to replace her.

It was a closer result than some analysts predicted, with Truss taking 57% of valid votes cast.

She has pledged to "deliver" on the energy crisis and is said to be considering a freeze on energy bills. Europeans and Britons are likely to face extremely high spikes and energy bills this winter.

Business Secretary Kwasi Kwarteng is expected to become chancellor, and Education Secretary James Cleverly the new foreign secretary.

#KENYA: Supreme Court Upholds Presidential Election Victory For Ruto

Deputy President William Ruto's declaration as president-elect after the August 8th election, has been upheld by the Supreme Court of Kenya. Opponents had file petitions with the court alleging massive fraud throughout the country.

Ruto garnered 50.5% of the vote in the closely fought election against 48.8% for Raila Odinga.

The 55-year-old will be sworn in as the country's fifth president on September 13th.
