#CANADA: Trudeau Re-Elected, Will Lead Minority Gov't

[world politics news]

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won a third straight election on Monday, but fell short of the majority they sought in the snap vote and will return to government with what will effectively be a status quo Parliament.

The Liberal victory left Erin O’Toole’s leadership of the Conservative Party in jeopardy. The Tory leader rose to the helm of the party last year promising to deliver in seat-rich Ontario but he struggled in the campaign with questions on how he would handle the pandemic and wavered on key platform pledges.

The People's Party of Maxime Vernier also failed to take off, despite crippling lockdowns that angered many Canadians.

As of Tuesday morning, the Liberals were leading or elected in 158 ridings, the Conservatives were at 119, the Bloc Québécois at 34, the NDP at 25 and the Green Party was at two seats.

#CANADA: Police Arrest People's Party Leader #Bernier For Violating Quarantine Order In Manitoba

[world politics news]

Police in Manitoba have arrested People's Party of Canada leader Maxime Bernier during his provincial tour for violating covid-19 quarantine regulations.

Bernier was in Manitoba with a plan to host events in multiple cities, but was warned by the province's public health authorities that he would be required to quarantine for 14 days upon arriving in the province.

The People's Party leader instead vowed to continue on with his rallies in spite of the warning.

Bernier said in a TV interview that the $1,200 fine he received as a result of the rally he attended violated his constitutional rights under Canada's Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

He said that after his arrest, police followed him back to his hotel.

"The police were very strict with me and they said you must leave the province early tomorrow morning and they followed us when I was driving to my hotel to be sure that I'm going to my hotel. I was feeling like being in a communist country," he said, on the Right-leaning Ezra Levant Show on Rebel News.

In court, the judge issued a $1,000 Bond for his release, and set a July 27th court appearance.

#CANADA: People's Party Leader Decries Gov't Inaction On Pipeline; Outlines Agenda

[world politics news]

People’s Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier made a stop in Calgary this past weekend to rally Alberta supporters with a message targeting Ottawa. The Quebec Member of Parliament, who founded the party last year, said he has proposed to "put an end to Ottawa’s intrusions in provincial matters such as health care and education, and to transfer tax points to provinces and let them manage their affairs with complete autonomy."

Bernier said his proposed plan for pipeline construction is to scrap the federal government’s oil tanker and environmental assessment bills, streamline the process for approving pipeline construction and find a private buyer for the Trans Mountain pipeline. The People's Party is a breakaway party from the Conservative Party, led by Andrew Scheer, who narrowly defeated Bernier for the party's leadership contest in 2017.

#CANADA: Former Conservative Maxime Bernier Founds New "People's Party of Canada"

[world politics news]

Quebec Member of Parliament Maxime Bernier is launching a new party, The People’s Party of Canada. Bernier says the name fits a party that represents people who are tired of Canadian politics being hijacked by special interest groups, cartels and lobbyists. The maverick MP left the Conservative Party last month after spending much of the year butting heads with party Leader Andrew Scheer and says the new party will be registered with Elections Canada over the next several weeks.

#CANADA: Controversial MP Maxime Bernier Leaves "Morally Corrupt" Conservative Party To Form A New Party Of His Own

[world politics news]

Controversial Quebec MP Maxime Bernier has made a scorched-earth exit from the Conservatives, while announcing plans to start his own federal party. Bernier, who represents the riding of Beauce, made the announcement just as the party's policy convention kicked off in Halifax. Bernier has caused waves for recent tweets questioning Canada's policies promoting diversity, which opponents called "xenophobic," and Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer distanced himself from the tweets, a move some called "weak." Scheer narrowly defeated Bernier for the leadership of the Conservative Party last year.

#CANADA: Conservative MP Maxime Bernier Under Fire For His Tweets Against Liberal's "Extreme Multiculturalism," "Victimhood"

[world politics news]

Conservative MP Maxime Bernier of Quebec has come under fire for accusing the governing Liberal Party of pursuing a policy of "extreme multiculturalism" and the "cult of victimhood." He made the accusation in a series of tweets that have been attacked by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as being "divisive." Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer - who narrowly defeated Bernier to leader the party last year - coldly said Bernier "speaks for himself" and refused to say whether he'd remove him from his party positions. Bernier was dumped from the party's shadow cabinet earlier this year after clashing with Scheer.
