#DJIBOUTI: Nation Votes, But Opposition Boycotts

Voters in the Horn of Africa nation of Djibouti were choosing a new parliament on Friday in an election boycotted by the main opposition parties.

The election is being held amid speculation over a potential successor to President Ismael Omar Guelleh, one of Africa's longest serving leaders, who has ruled the nation with an iron fist since 1999.

Guelleh's ruling Union for Presidential Majority (UMP) is one of only two parties taking part and is certain of victory.

#POLAND: Former EU Pres. Tusk Will Boycott Election; Incumbent Duda Is Likely Winner

Former European Council president Donald Tusk is appealing for a boycott of the upcoming presidential election in his native Poland, saying the postal vote the government has proposed carries health risks amid the coronavirus pandemic and would not meet democratic standards for free, equal and transparent elections.

Tusk, who served as Poland’s prime minister from 2007 to 2014, said in a video on Twitter that he would not “not take part in the voting procedure" for the May 10 balloting. He said the vote promoted by the right-leaning ruling party “has nothing to do with an election.”

According to the latest election poll conducted by Statista in April 2020, the current President of Poland, Andrzej Duda, has the highest chance of winning next year's presidential election. The poll estimates that he may count on 59% of votes.

#EGYPT: Seven Opposition Parties Say They Will Boycott Next Month's Presidential Election

Seven opposition parties have decided not to take part in next month’s presidential elections, citing a “tight timetable did not give competitors a real chance to present themselves and their programs." Comprised of seven leftist and liberal parties and 150 political figures, the Democratic Civil Movement was founded in December of last year to define a unified stance regarding the presidential polls. Pres. Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, who has been in office since 2014, announced on 19 January his intention to run for a second four-year term. Al-Sisi’s sole rival is Moussa Mustafa Moussa, chairman of the little known Ghad Party.

#BURUNDI: Pres. Nkurunziza Wins Third Term After Oppo. Parties Boycott Election

Pres. Pierre Nkurunziza has won a third term, winning 69% of the vote. Opposition parties boycotted the elections, leaving former general Agathon Rwasa, who took 19% of the vote, as Nkurunziza’s only opponent. Rwasa's called for the formation of a national unity government with several opposition parties to prevent a possible coup attempt.
