New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern slipped further in popularity and her Labour Party could face an uphill struggle to retain power next year, a new political poll shows.

Ardern’s rating as preferred prime minister fell to 30% from 33% in May, according to a 1News Kantar poll conducted in the first week of August. Her rating is the lowest since she became prime minister in 2017. The poll was published late Monday in Wellington.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has decided to delay the election until October 17.

Announcing the decision this morning, Ardern said the re-emergence of Covid-19 in the community was a cause for concern during the election period.

And while the Electoral Commission said voting could safely happen under alert level 2, Ardern said she also had to factor in participation of voters, fairness and certainty.

A 25-year-old New Zealand politician has admitted making "some people very mad" by using a viral phrase in parliament.

Chlöe Swarbrick told an older lawmaker "OK boomer" after they interrupted her speech on climate change.

There was little reaction in parliament but the Green Party member soon began trending online. She has also been accused of ageism.

In internet parlance, "OK boomer" is a derogatory phrase used primarily by younger generations to show their indignation towards older people deemed indifferent to their concerns. It is used widely on platforms like Twitter and TikTok.

"Boomer is a state of mind," Swarbrick said later in an interview.

New Zealand's Associate Transportation minister demanded an investigation into a total ban on internal combustion engines by 2035, documents reveal. A Green Party member, Associate Transport Minister Julie Anne Genter ordered an investigation into a total ban on gas car imports by 2035 among a range of options to reduce emissions in the national transport fleet.

A Ministry of Transport report from September last year showed officials had been instructed to "progress an initiative to regulate an end-date of 2035 to the import of light vehicles that are unable to be driven without fossil-fuels."

A war of words over Australia's policy of deporting New Zealanders is souring the "special relationship" between the two nations. Australia has deported more than 1,000 New Zealand citizens in the past two years but the recent detention of a 17-year-old New Zealander in an adult detention facility prompted New Zealand Justice Minister Andrew Little to say such deportations had a “venal, political strain” to them. Australian Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton responded by saying Australia did a lot of the "heavy lifting" in screening regional refugees, and that Little should "think more carefully before speaking."
