#CANADA: Conservative Senator Seeks "Review" Of Party Leader O'Toole

Conservative Saskatchewan Senator Denise Batters is calling on the Conservatives to hold a review of Erin O’Toole’s leadership within the next six months.

In a video statement, Batters launched a petition for Conservative members to seek a referendum on O’Toole’s leadership, accusing him of causing division within the party. 

“On behalf of Conservative activists and members from coast to coast, we started this petition because we don’t want to see the party ripped apart again,” said Batters.

Batters excited the poor results of the 44th general election held earlier this year in which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won re-election. O'Toole has come under fire for running on "moderate" positions during the campaign, such as supporting a carbon tax.

O'Toole promised to make inroads in the Greater Toronto Area and fell well short of the mark; the party actually lost seats in this vote-rich region. O'Toole's attempt to shift the party closer to the political centre also alienated some more right-wing small-c conservative supporters — some of whom voted for the People's Party of Canada (PPC).

#CANADA: Trudeau Re-Elected, Will Lead Minority Gov't

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won a third straight election on Monday, but fell short of the majority they sought in the snap vote and will return to government with what will effectively be a status quo Parliament.

The Liberal victory left Erin O’Toole’s leadership of the Conservative Party in jeopardy. The Tory leader rose to the helm of the party last year promising to deliver in seat-rich Ontario but he struggled in the campaign with questions on how he would handle the pandemic and wavered on key platform pledges.

The People's Party of Maxime Vernier also failed to take off, despite crippling lockdowns that angered many Canadians.

As of Tuesday morning, the Liberals were leading or elected in 158 ridings, the Conservatives were at 119, the Bloc Québécois at 34, the NDP at 25 and the Green Party was at two seats.

#CANADA: Gender & Equality Minister Loses Seat, Called Taliban "Our Brothers"

A Liberal Party cabinet minister who had called the Taliban "our brothers" in a news conference lost her seat in Parliament in Monday's election.

Conservative candidate Michelle Ferreri is now projected to defeat Liberal Minister Maryan Monsef, after 130 polls being counted.

The now-former Liberal Minister for Gender Equality received major backlash after she referred to the Taliban as "our brothers" during a press conference providing updates on the situation in Afghanistan, just days after the election was called.

Monsef, an Afghan Canadian, said: "I want to take this opportunity to speak to our brothers the Taliban; we call on you to ensure the safe and secure passage of any individual in Afghanistan out of the country. We call on you to immediately stop the violence, the genocide, the femicide, the destruction of infrastructure, including heritage buildings."

Nova Scotia's Progressive Conservatives surged to a stunning upset election win Tuesday over the governing Liberals after capitalizing on their main opponent's early stumbles and promising a big-spending fix to the troubled health system.

During the 32-day campaign, Tory Leader Tim Houston unveiled a left-leaning platform that promised hundreds of millions of dollars in the first year of the party's mandate to increase the number of family doctors, bolster the mental health system and create more nursing home beds.

#CANADA: PM Trudeau Calls September Election

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will travel to Rideau Hall today and is expected to ask the Governor General to dissolve Parliament and launch a federal election.

The prime minister's itinerary, released Saturday night, showed a meeting with Governor General Mary Simon set for 10 a.m. ET

If Simon approves Trudeau's request, delivered in the form of a document called an "instrument of advice," she will then authorize the dissolution of Parliament and the issuance of election writs, formally beginning Canada's 44th federal election.

It will likely occur on Sept. 20, and involve the five major political parties.

#CANADA: Liberal Party Wins Majority In Newfoundland and Labrador Election

The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador will form a majority government in the Atlantic province after a chaotic election season postponed by the coronavirus pandemic.

According to results, the Liberals won 22 seats, an increase of two from the previous election, with PC Party leader Ches Crosbie and NDP leader Alison Coffin losing their seats to Liberal candidates.

The original February 13th election date was postponed due to an outbreak of covid-19 in the province.

Newfoundland and Labrador faces the both the highest rates of unemployment and highest per-person debt in Canada.

#CANADA: Progressive Conservatives Win Majority In New Brunswick Legislature

New Brunswick's governing party, the Progressive Conservatives, won a majority in the province's legislature Monday night.

Party leader Blaine Higgs won the coveted majority after two years of leading the province's first minority government since 1920. The victory ends a streak of four consecutive single-term governments. 

The PCs have been elected in 27 ridings, two more than the 25 needed for a majority.

#CANADA: Erin O'Toole Wins Conservative Party Leadership Contest

Erin O'Toole has won the leadership for the Conservative Party.

On the third and final ballot, O'Toole took 57% of the votes, compared to 43% for second-place contender Peter MacKay.

O'Toole claimed victory after taking support from Leslyn Lewis, who finished with a surprisingly strong performance but finished in third spot. Derek Sloan dropped off after the first ballot.

The results were delayed by several hours because the machine used to open ballot envelopes damaged several thousand voting cards.
