The head of Canada's,intelligence service recommended that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoke the Emergencies Act during the so-called ‘Freedom Convoy’ protests earlier this year, an inquiry into the decision has heard.

David Vigneault, the head of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service, told the Public Order Emergencies Commission about his advice to the prime minister during a closed-door interview earlier this month, according to an unclassified summary.

#CANADA: Trucker Convoy Organizer Granted Bail, Banned From Social Media

Pat King, an organizer of the “Freedom Convoy” that paralyzed downtown Ottawa for three weeks last winter, but also galvanized opposition across Canada to mandatory vaccines, has been granted bail.

As a condition of his release, the Red Deer, Alberta native has been restricted by the court from posting messages on social media sites.

#EU: Euro Parliamentarians Attack Trudeau For "Dictatorship" During Brussels Speech

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was given a rude welcome by several members of the European Parliament this week.

During a session of the European Parliament in Brussels, several MEPs called Trudeau out, accusing him of violating human rights over the handling of the Freedom Convoy protest in Ottawa last month.

In one speech that has gone viral online, MEP Mislav Kolakusic of Croatia criticized Canada’s leader, stating, “There are those among us who trample on those fundamental values,” a reference to some protesters’ controversial encounter with police horses near Parliament Hill.

Christine Anderson, a member of Parliament from Germany, also rose to condemn Trudeau, saying, "You're a disgrace to any democracy."

French MEP Virginie Joron not only spoke, but wore a sweater honoring American and Canadian truckers who participated in the truck convoys in both countries.

#CANADA: Civil Liberties Groups Outraged Over Police Threats To Arrest Reporters

Civil liberties and legal rights groups are expressing outrage after Ottawa Police threatened members of the media with arrest for reporting on the ongoing crackdown of peaceful protesters calling for an end to COVID-19 mandates. 

On Friday, the official Ottawa Police Twitter account warned that media attending the protest zone would be “subject to arrest.”

#CANADA: Trudeau Ends Emergencies Act Amid Criticism

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has revoked the emergency powers he invoked just over a week ago to end a weeks-long anti-government protest that paralysed the country’s capital.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday afternoon, Trudeau said the Emergencies Act was necessary to help law enforcement agencies disperse large numbers of protesters who had descended on Ottawa in anger over coronavirus measures, among other grievances.

Many critics have questioned whether Trudeau’s government had met the strict, legal threshold required to invoke the Act, and labeled Trudeau a "dictator" for imposing it. Members of parliament complained that average citizens had to go through police checkpoints to get to work in Ottawa, and ordinary citizens were no longer allowed to attend Parliament meetings.

Justice Minister David Lametti said being pro Trump will be a factor in the government's choice of which bank accounts to seize under the Emergencies Act says Canada's Justice minister.

“If you are a member of a pro-Trump movement who's donating... you ought to be worried” about your bank account being frozen.

Lametti made the comments on CTV's Power Play program. He also said that truckers that participate in the convoy risk losing their licenses and insurance.

#CANADA: Trudeau Gov't Invokes "Emergencies Act" To Seize Trucker Convoy Funding

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that measures are being taken to curtail the funding of the ongoing anti-mandate Trucker convoy protests, which includes both crowdfunding platforms as well as digital assets and cryptocurrency.

“In invoking the Emergencies Act, we are announcing the following immediate actions: first, we are broadening the scope of Canada’s anti-money laundering and terrorist financing rules so that they cover crowdfunding platforms and the payment service providers they use,” said Freeland.

“These changes cover all forms of transactions including digital assets such as cryptocurrencies. Illegal blockades have highlighted the fact that crowdfunding platforms and some of the payment service providers they use are not fully captured under the Proceeds of Crime and Terrorist Financing Act,” she said.
