Alberta United Conservative Party leadership candidate Rebecca Schulz sent supporters an email pretending to be a New Democratic Party supporter begging Conservatives not to vote for Schulz because the NDP are "afraid of her."

UCP members on Schulz’s mailing list received an email from “Your Friendly Neighbourhood NDP Supporter” with the subject “The NDP’s Worst Nightmare.” The actual email address listed is clearly from Schulz' campaign, however.

#CANADA: Alberta Premier Kenney Out As United Conservative Leader

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney's decision to resign as leader of the United Conservative Party has set the stage for a tumultuous contest for the job, leading to questions about what's to come. 

Kenney narrowly survived the UCP leadership review last Wednesday, only to announce that he was quitting the top job anyway.

To gasps of surprise from supporters at an invitation-only event in Calgary, Kenney said the 51.4 per cent support he received was not enough to stay on.

#CANADA: Alberta Cabinet Minister, Premier's Chief of Staff Resign Over Holiday Travel

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has accepted the resignations of Grande Prairie MLA Tracy Allard as minister of municipal affairs and of Jamie Huckabay, his chief of staff. 

World Politics News posted yesterday that Allard had been under fire for taking a holiday in Hawaii over the Christmas break.

In a Facebook post on Monday, Kenney said he has also demoted five other United Conservative Party MLAs who travelled internationally over the holidays. 

"Albertans have every right to expect that people in positions of public trust be held to a higher standard of conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic," he wrote.

"Millions of Albertans have made real sacrifices over the past 10 months to help keep each other safe. They are right to be angry about people in positions of leadership vacationing outside of the country.

By travelling abroad over the holidays, these individuals demonstrated extremely poor judgment."

Allard and Huckabay join a growing number of politicians across Canada who have admitted to travelling outside the country despite pandemic restrictions, leading to resignations in some cases. They include former Ontario finance minister Rod Phillips, a Progressive Conservative; Liberal MP Kamal Khera; and New Democrat MP Niki Ashton.

#CANADA: Backlash After Alberta Gov't Minister Vacations In Hawaii

Tracy Allard, Alberta's Minister of Municipal Affairs, is taking heat for vacationing for two weeks in Hawaii during the coronavirus outbreak last month.

Allard, who is a United Conservative Party Member of the Legislative Assembly for Grande Prairie, left for a family vacation in Hawaii on Dec. 19 and just returned this week.

In response to backlash, the United Conservative Party Member of the Legislative Assembly said the trip with her immediate family had been "fully compliant" with the province's health orders and that she had felt its border testing pilot offered a safe way to carry through with the tradition, but in retrospect, that she could see that it was "the wrong decision."

Allard became an MLA when she was elected in April, 2019. She entered the cabinet of Premier Jason Kenney in August, 2020.

Allard is apparently not alone. there were reportedly up to nine other members of Kenney's government traveling overseas during the holidays.

Nationally, two Liberal MPs have reportedly resigned from their government and House of Commons roles after admitting to recently traveling overseas. MP Sameer Zuberi stepped down from multiple committee roles while Kamal Khera resigned as parliamentary secretary to the Minister of International Development.

#CANADA: Jason Kenney's United Conservatives Defeat Notley's NDP In Alberta Election

Alberta's Jason Kenney dreamed of uniting his province's two conservative parties in order to stop splitting the vote in provincial elections. His dream paid off as his United Conservative Party roared into power in yesterday's election, defeating the left-of-center New Democrats.

Kenney ran a campaign promising to scrap the carbon tax and usher in a new era of fiscal conservatism.

Kenney, 50, was first elected to the Alberta legislature when he won a byelection in Calgary-Lougheed in December. In 2017, he successfully campaigned to merge the Wildrose Party with the Progressive Conservative Party of Alberta, ending vote-splitting that was causing them to lose elections to the New Democrats. He was then elected the party's leader.

#CANADA: New Democrat Activist Slurs Calgary Day Before Tight Election

The day before provincial elections in Alberta, a New Democratic Party insider has called Calgary a narrow-minded cow town."

Derek Leebosh, the Vice President of public affairs at Environics, tweeted his opinion on Calgary, calling Canada’s third largest city a “narrow minded cow town." He later deleted the tweet, but not before it caused an online backlash.

Leebosh said Calgary was becoming a “real city” that votes more “like Denver or Winnipeg,” also stating that Calgary was becoming less “narrow minded” in his view.

The ruling New Democrats are facing a tough challenge from Jason Kenney's United Conservatives.
