#CANADA: Conservative Senator Seeks "Review" Of Party Leader O'Toole

[world politics news]

Conservative Saskatchewan Senator Denise Batters is calling on the Conservatives to hold a review of Erin O’Toole’s leadership within the next six months.

In a video statement, Batters launched a petition for Conservative members to seek a referendum on O’Toole’s leadership, accusing him of causing division within the party.

“On behalf of Conservative activists and members from coast to coast, we started this petition because we don’t want to see the party ripped apart again,” said Batters.

Batters excited the poor results of the 44th general election held earlier this year in which Prime Minister Justin Trudeau won re-election. O'Toole has come under fire for running on "moderate" positions during the campaign, such as supporting a carbon tax.

#CANADA: Conservatives Debate O:Toole's Future After Election Loss

[world politics news]

Conservative Leader Erin O'Toole's failure to end Justin Trudeau's government is inspiring some frustrated partisans to call for his replacement.

O'Toole promised to make inroads in the Greater Toronto Area and fell well short of the mark; the party actually lost seats in this vote-rich region. O'Toole's attempt to shift the party closer to the political centre also alienated some more right-wing small-c conservative supporters — some of whom voted for the People's Party of Canada (PPC).

#CANADA: Trudeau Re-Elected, Will Lead Minority Gov't

[world politics news]

Justin Trudeau’s Liberals won a third straight election on Monday, but fell short of the majority they sought in the snap vote and will return to government with what will effectively be a status quo Parliament.

The Liberal victory left Erin O’Toole’s leadership of the Conservative Party in jeopardy. The Tory leader rose to the helm of the party last year promising to deliver in seat-rich Ontario but he struggled in the campaign with questions on how he would handle the pandemic and wavered on key platform pledges.

The People's Party of Maxime Vernier also failed to take off, despite crippling lockdowns that angered many Canadians.

As of Tuesday morning, the Liberals were leading or elected in 158 ridings, the Conservatives were at 119, the Bloc Québécois at 34, the NDP at 25 and the Green Party was at two seats.

#CANADA: Trudeau Defends Calling Election During Pandemic

[world politics news]

Responding to critics, Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau said he “absolutely” does not regret calling the federal election during the COVID-19 pandemic, and he pledged to be “ferocious” in the last week of the campaign, as his main competitor, Erin O’Toole, pitched a changed Conservative Party ready to earn voters’ trust.

The leaders began their final bids for votes on Friday, a day after the last leaders’ debate and with just 10 days to the Sept. 20 election.

#CANADA: Deputy Prime Minister Has Tweet Labelled "Manipulated Media"

[world politics news]

A video tweeted by incumbent Liberal candidate Chrystia Freeland, who served as deputy prime minister in Justin Trudeau's government, was given a warning label Sunday from Twitter, which marked it as "manipulated media."

Freeland's tweets, posted in both English and French, contain several edits and show Conservative leader Erin O'Toole answering a question about privatized health care during an online question-and-answer session in July 2020 during the Conservative leadership race.

The tweet shows O'Toole being asked, during his party leadership race, if he would bring private, "for-profit" health care to Canada. He quickly responds: "yes."

However, in the original recording of O'Toole's remarks on heath care — which can be seen here at about the 12:30 mark — the Conservative leader also noted that "universal access remains paramount."

On Sunday, the party accused the Liberals of spreading misinformation.

#CANADA: Trudeau Taking "Wait And See" Approach To Taliban, Consults Hillary Clinton

[world politics news]

At a campaign stop in Markham, ⁦Ontario, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau⁩ mentioned that he consulted ⁦Hillary Clinton⁩ about the situation in Afghanistan and his concern for women and girls. He says his government is taking a “wait and see” approach on the Taliban.

Conservative Party Leader Erin O'Toole, meanwhile, said his government wouldn't recognize the Taliban government.

“A Conservative government will not recognize the Taliban as the legitimate government of Afghanistan,” O’Toole said.

#CANADA: Controversial MP Expelled From Conservative Party After Taking Donation From White Nationalist

[world politics news]

Controversial MP Derek Sloan was kicked out of the Conservative caucus this week, a move party leader Erin O'Toole said was due to a “pattern of destructive behavior” that had become a distraction.

O'Toole's, who defeated Sloan for the party leader position last summer, said Sloan's dismissal was not solely over a $131 donation he'd taken from a white nationalist, and came after hours of heated debate within caucus that saw MPs castigate both Sloan for his record and O'Toole for how he'd handled the issue. The donation to Sloan was made during the leadership campaign, in which Sloan came in fourth place.

In a seven-part tweet, Sloan responded to his expulsion and attacked O'Toole.

"My ejection from caucus shows an absolute cowardice and failure to address real issues that animate much of our base?" he said. "This party does not belong to Erin O’Toole it belongs to the members."

Sloan's backers note that the donation went through the Conservative Party itself, which took a 10% cut, and that it was so small that his treasurer (who might have seen it, not Sloan himself) likely never saw it.

Some have also suggested that the leak about the donation might have come from O'Toole himself.

The Ontario MP said he will now sit in the Federal Parliament as an Independent and will continue to fight for conservatives voices.

#CANADA: PM Trudeau Threatens Snap Election If Conservative Motion To Form COVID Committee Passes

[world politics news]

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau says he will call an election that “nobody wants” this week if the House of Commons passes a Conservative Party motion that he says will confirm it has lost confidence in his minority government.

The prime minister was responding to a high-stakes motion introduced earlier in the day by Conservative Pary Leader Erin O’Toole that calls for a new parliamentary committee to investigate alleged misuse of public money on COVID-19 relief programs, including the WE Charity controversy.

#CANADA: Oppo. Leader O'Toole Names Shadow Cabinet Critics

[world politics news]

The list of who will sit on the Opposition front benches as the critics for the Liberal government ministries is a mix of those who backed O'Toole in his leadership campaign, those who backed his rivals and several key players in the party who had remained entirely neutral in the race.

Among them: his predecessor Andrew Scheer, who will serve as infrastructure critic; Ontario's Pierre Poilievre, who remains as finance critic; and Alberta MP Michelle Rempel Garner, who will take on the health portfolio.

Ontario MP Michael Chong is taking a big step up to become the Conservatives' critic for foreign affairs, considered one of the most high-profile portfolios.

That was the portfolio O'Toole himself was granted in 2017 after he lost the leadership race that year to Scheer.

#CANADA: Erin O'Toole Wins Conservative Party Leadership Contest

[world politics news]

Erin O'Toole has won the leadership for the Conservative Party.

On the third and final ballot, O'Toole took 57% of the votes, compared to 43% for second-place contender Peter MacKay.

O'Toole claimed victory after taking support from Leslyn Lewis, who finished with a surprisingly strong performance but finished in third spot. Derek Sloan dropped off after the first ballot.

The results were delayed by several hours because the machine used to open ballot envelopes damaged several thousand voting cards.

#CANADA: Alberta Premier Jason Kenney Endorses Underdog O'Toole For Conservative Party Leader

[world politics news]

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney — one of the most prominent voices in Canada's Conservative movement — has thrown his support behind Erin O'Toole's bid to become the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada.

In an email to party members provided to journalists by O'Toole's team, Kenney says he thought long and hard about his decision to endorse a candidate.
