Orthodox Monks of Mt. Athos Defying EU Evacuation Order; Say: "Come and Take It" [world politics news]
Embattled Orthodox Christian monks of the historic Mt. Athos Monastery in Greece have issued a challenge to EU authorities attempting to make renovations to the 10th Century structure: "Molon Lave" ("come and take") the same message Leonidas (of "300" fame) gave to the Persians when they demanded their weapons be surrendered. The renovations are being done at the request of rebel monks who won funding from European Union development authority. The release (linked above) reads, in part: "We will not allow this to happen even if it is the last thing we will do. We have not asked for anything, other than to be left in our peace. They can take their European subsidies since they care so much about them, but they should leave us in our prayer."
