#EGYPT: Overseas Voters Cast First Ballots In Election

The first phase of parliamentary elections kicked off, Monday by allowing voters to find their ballot papers online on the National Elections Authority website in order to resend them to the embassies and diplomatic missions in different countries during the voting days.

A period of "electoral silence" for the House elections started Sunday ahead of the parliament elections. During the electoral silence period all candidates are prohibited from practicing any form of electoral advertising, in order to allow voters to choose freely.

According to the elections schedule, the candidates’ campaigns ended October 18.

#EGYPT: Pres. Al-Sisi Wins Re-Election With Near 100% Of Vote On Reduced Turnout

Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has been re-elected for a second four-year term, after winning 97% of the vote last week, official results show. The amount is the same as he won in the last election in 2014. But turnout, at 41%, was six percentage points lower. Electoral officials also said 7% of the 24 million ballots cast were spoiled.

#EGYPT: Seven Opposition Parties Say They Will Boycott Next Month's Presidential Election

Seven opposition parties have decided not to take part in next month’s presidential elections, citing a “tight timetable did not give competitors a real chance to present themselves and their programs." Comprised of seven leftist and liberal parties and 150 political figures, the Democratic Civil Movement was founded in December of last year to define a unified stance regarding the presidential polls. Pres. Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, who has been in office since 2014, announced on 19 January his intention to run for a second four-year term. Al-Sisi’s sole rival is Moussa Mustafa Moussa, chairman of the little known Ghad Party.

#EGYPT: Former Military Chief Of Staff's Presidential Campaign Announcement Doesn't Impress Many

The quiet announcement - made by a small, largely unknown political party - that former military chief of staff Sami Anan would run for president this year, caused little stir in the press, and raised suspicion that his was a stealth candidacy. While Pres. Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi who has yet to officially announce he will be a candidate in the March election, it's seen as an almost foregone conclusion he will win re-election.

#EGYPT: Former PM Shafiq "Deported" From UAE After Claiming He Was Prevented From Leaving; Returns To Egypt

UAE officials on Saturday took former Egyptian premier and presidential hopeful Ahmed Shafiq from his Abu Dhabi home to be deported back to Egypt. The move comes days after Shafiq, in exile in the UAE since 2012, announced his candidacy in next year's election and then said he was being prevented from leaving the country, angering his Emirati hosts.

#EGYPT: Run-Off Election Attracts Only "Average" Interest

Egyptian voters went to the polls last week, as the second round of voting came to an end. Commentators expect just an average turnout for the election, ballots for which are still being counted. In the first round of the second stage of the election, 2,893 candidates competed for 222 seats reserved for independents and 195 for the 60 seats reserved for parties.

#EGYPT: Vote Tallies Suggest Pro-Sisi Coalition Will Dominate Parliament

Semi-final results of the second and final stage of Egypt’s parliamentary elections suggest that the "For the Love of Egypt" coalition, which supports Pres. Abdel-Fattah Al-Sisi, will dominate the next parliament. The coalition won 60 seats reserved to party-based candidates in the second stage, boosting its total to 120 seats, or 23%

#EGYPT: Over 60 Candidates For Parliament Rejected Due to "Heavy Drug Use" After Gov't Drug Tests

Egypt's Higher Elections Committee announced an initial list of candidates for the parliamentary elections, rejecting 535 of the 5,955 candidates who applied to run. Over 60 were rejected for drug use. Health Ministry official Hassan Nagi said, "We were surprised that so many would-be candidates were heavy drug users," a contention several candidates deny.

For the first time in three years, Egyptians will go to the polls in parliamentary elections. Egypt's legislative elections, the first since President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi took office, are to be contested in phases starting on October 18.  Al-Sisi allies are expected to do well in the election.

#EGYPT: Elections Face Delays After Law Banning Dual-Citizens Candidacy Ruled Unconstitutional

A government-affiliated committee began meeting this week to redraft two election laws after the Supreme Constitutional Court ruled them unconstitutional. One dealt with election boundaries, the other unfairly banned candidates with dual citizenship, the court said. The ruling could delay the first round of parliamentary elections, scheduled for March 21.

Daily News Egypt interviewed Na’sa Ibrahim, a female Bedouin activist from South Sinai who will run individually for a seat. Part of the Al-Oliakat tribe, Na’sa is the only female candidate to run for parliament. She presented her official papers to the court Saturday.

Mohamed Morsi.
