#UK: Labour Party Shadow Chancellor Says No Tax Hikes If They Win Election

[world politics news]

A representative of the UK's Left-leaning Labour Party has said there will be no hikes in income tax or National Insurance if it wins the general election, which is widely expected - but some spending cuts have not been ruled out, she said.

Shadow chancellor Rachel Reeves told the BBC's Laura Kuenssberg she did not want to make any spending cuts.

But she added she was "under no illusion about the scale of the challenge" and would face "difficult decisions," she said.

the UK's Labour Party has repeatedly criticized the incumbent Conservatives for not spending enough on Healthcare and other priorities, which will make Reeves' promise hard to swallow among Labour voters and hard to believe among Conservative ones.

If Labour needs other parties to form a coalition with them to form a government, it's unclear if Reeves would be able to keep her promise.

#JAPAN: Consumption Tax Rate Rises From 8% To 10% Today

[world politics news]

The Japanese national consumption tax rate rose from 8% to 10% on Tuesday as a way to secure a source of funding for ballooning social security costs and promote fiscal reform, marking the third increase since the levy was introduced in 1989 and the first hike since April 2014.

The increase to 10% was initially scheduled for October 2015, but Prime Minister Shinzo Abe postponed the hike twice due to concerns about the impact on the Japanese economy.

The government has prepared a series of measures to soften the blow to consumers, including the introduction of a reduced tax rate of 8% for certain goods, and of a point program for cashless payments.

#CANADA: New Democrats Propose 1% "Wealth Tax" To Fund Platform Promises

[world politics news]

The New Democratic Party’s proposed wealth tax, a centerpiece of funding the party’s election platform, could raise nearly $70 billion over the next 10 years, Canada’s budget watchdog has found.

The “super-wealth tax,” as the NDP is calling it, is similar to an idea promoted by U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, and is part of the NDP’s campaign focus on tax fairness and inequality.

The party wants to apply a 1% tax to fortunes worth more than $20 million. Unlike a tax on income, a wealth tax would apply to all assets, including real estate, with the aim of reducing economic inequality.
