Polls closed at 6pm after controversial parliamentary elections in Tunisia, the first vote since the opposition-controlled chamber was suspended by President Kais Saied in July 2021 and later dissolved.

The elections were marked by low voter turnout, with 8.8 percent according to the electoral commission.

The opposition has boycotted Saturday’s election, calling the vote the latest step in Saied’s consolidation of power, which included the passage of a new constitution in August that did away with the country’s hybrid parliamentary democracy.

Libya's legislative elections have been postponed until January, the country's eastern-based parliament said on Tuesday, instead of being held on December 24 as planned.

"The election for members of the House of Representatives will take place 30 days after the presidential vote," still scheduled for December 24, parliamentary spokesman Abdullah Bliheg told a press conference.

Elections are supposed to help unify the country after years of conflict and division, but disputes over their legal and constitutional basis have laid bare the extent of the split between the country's east and west.

The House of Representatives, based in the eastern city of Tobruk, has been in disagreement over electoral laws with a rival body, the equivalent of Libya's senate, in the western city of Tripoli.

#MOROCCO: Half Of Registered Voters Head To Polls

Moroccan voters have headed to the polls to choose a new parliament and local leaders in elections that have been reshaped by the pandemic, amid widespread disillusionment with the political system. Only about half of registered voters appeared at polling stations.

About 18 million people cast their ballots on Wednesday, the third time since a new constitution was introduced in 2011 in the wake of the February 20th Movement, the local version of the Arab Spring.

The Libyan parliament has called on the Egyptian army to intervene in Libya to expel Turkish military there to prop up rival militia groups.

Parliament confirmed that Libya is exposed to a blatant Turkish  "interference" in violation of its sovereignty, with the blessing of armed militias controlling the west of the country and the de facto authority subject to them.

#EGYPT: Public Debt Shrank From 108% Of GDP To 90% In First Half Of 2019, Says Finance Minister

 Minister of Finance Mohamed Maait says Egypt was able to decrease the public debt from 108% of the GDP in June 2017 to about 90% of GDP in June 2019. This means that financial control reached 18% of the GDP in only two years. Egypt achieved the highest real GDP growth in the Middle East and North Africa, recording 5.6% of GDP.

Maait said the public treasury made an early payment between July and December, recording about EGP 33bn in favour of pension funds, which represent the full interest dues to funds for the whole year instead of paying them in June 2020

#TUNISIA: PM Bans Niqab In Gov't Offices After Bombing

Tunisia has banned the wearing of the niqab in state-run buildings, citing security reasons following the terror attacks last month.

The Muslin-majority country's Prime Minister Youssef Chahed signed a government circular "banning access to public administrations and institutions to anyone with their face covered... for security reasons."

The ban on the face-veil comes following the double suicide bombing that shook Tunis on June 27. The attacks left two people dead and several others injured. Witnesses at the time claimed that one of the bombers was donning niqab, however, Tunisia's Ministry of the Interior has denied this.

The ban has been criticized as restricting freeom, but concerns that the nation's booming tourist trade would br affected by the violence has trumped those concerns.
