Blaming "climate change" and the West, Joseph Africano Bartel, undersecretary for Environment in the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, has announced the closure of schools and government businesses in this war-torn and poor African nation amid a severe heatwave. 

Yolanda Awel Deng, minister for Health, said heatwave like the current one hits cities the hardest, and reduce productivity. She urged people to remedying indoors as much as possible. She said the government is monitoring the situation for disease outbreaks.

#SOUTHSUDAN: Rebel Leader To Return As Vice President As Part Of Power-Sharing Deal To End Civil War

A power-sharing deal has been signed between South Sudan Pres. Salva Kiir and his deputy-turned-rebel leader Riek Machar, who will return to his position as one of the nation's four vice presidents, in the latest attempt to end a bloody civil war. The unitary government the two men will form together is the second attempt since 2013, when the Kiir accused Machar of plotting a coup, triggering a civil war. The last attempt, in 2015, collapsed when intense clashes broke out in Juba, the capital, a year after a similar deal was signed.

#JAPAN: Cabinet Approves Limited Weapon Use For Peacekeepers

Japan's cabinet has granted its peacekeepers in South Sudan the limited use of weapons in rescue operations.  The government will send a Ground Self-Defense Force engineering unit to the African country later this month. It will replace a Self-Defense Forces unit taking part in United Nations operations. The government has concluded that the situation in South Sudan meets its criteria for sending peacekeepers.

Pres. Salva Kiir is wasting no time, urging his supporters to mobilize voters for his re-election - in 2018. His Sudan People’s Liberation Movement Party handed in registration papers Jan. 13, just ahead of a deadline to register parties for future elections. Over 20 parties exist in South Sudan, which became independent in 2011, but has been racked by conflict since then.

#SOUTHSUDAN: Gov't And Rebels Sign Power-Sharing Agreement, Even As Fighting Continues

President Salva Kiir has signed a power-sharing agreement with rebels led by former Vice-President Riek Machar, even though he says he has "reservations" about the deal. With all parties having signed, it will mean an immediate ceasefire for both sides. Machar signed the agreement last week, though fighting resumed shortly thereafter.
