#AUSTRALIA: Peter Dutton Elected Liberal Party Leader After Election Deafeat

Peter Dutton being elected as the new Liberal Party leader and Sussan Ley as his deputy.

Their election follows the defeat last week of the Liberal party in Australia's federal elections. The next federal election is scheduled for 2025.

Dutton came out swinging after accepting the top spot, saying the country’s newly elected Labor government was not “ready to govern and we are already seeing their inexperience on display."

Dutton, 51, has represented the Queensland seat of Dickson since 2001 and previously held senior ministerial office as a cabinet minister in Coalition governments between 2013 and 2022.

The National Party also determined their leadership on Monday, with Queensland MP David Littleproud successfully ousting Barnaby Joyce as leader

#CANADA: Organ Donation To Be The Default In Alberta In Legislation Passes

Every adult in Alberta would be considered a potential organ and tissue donor — unless they choose otherwise — if a new private member's bill is passed in the legislature.

The Human Tissue and Organ Donation (Presumed Consent) Amendment Act passed first reading on Wednesday after it was presented by MLA Matthew Jones.

Albertans currently have to opt-in as organ donors.

#SOUTHKOREA: Supreme Court Rules Against "Peak Wage" Practice; Calls It Age Discrimination

The Supreme Court has ruled against the peak wage system introduced by a large number of local companies to gradually cut the salaries of senior workers several years before retirement.

The top court said the peak wage system is an illegal discrimination against workers on the basis of age, making the first ruling of its kind in a lawsuit filed by a former employee of a local research institute.

It noted that the peak wage system violates a clause of the Act on Prohibition of Age Discrimination in Employment and Aged Employment Promotion, which stipulates that workers and persons wanting to become workers should not be discriminated against on the basis of age without reasonable causes.

Twitter says it suspended Dutch far-right leader Geert Wilders "in error" after reports that he had violated the platform's rules on hate speech.

The social network admitted it had "temporarily restricted" the outspoken anti Islam politician's access to his account on Monday.

The move came after the Freedom Party (PVV) chairman had published a tweet addressed to Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, denouncing the "violence of the intolerant ideology called Islam".

The Iraqi parliament is is considering a bill seeking to criminalize attempts to normalize relations with Israel. The bill seeks to introduce the death penalty and other punitive measure for all state officials, private entities and groups for having any kind of relations with the “Zionist entity."

Formally known as Banning Normalization and Establishment of Relations with the Zionist Entity, the bill was introduced by MPs of the Sadrist Parliamentary Block in the parliament after its leader Muqtada al-Sadr asked for it in late April.

The Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves has declared a national emergency following cyber attacks from Conti ransomware group on multiple government bodies.

Tech observers say Conti published most of the 672 GB dump that appears to contain data belonging to the Costa Rican government agencies.

The declaration was signed into law by Chaves on Sunday, May 8th, same day as the economist and former Minister of Finance effectively became the country's 49th and current president.

#EU: European Parliament Introduces Election Reforms: Younger People Voting, At-Large Seats

European lawmakers have backed a proposal to reform the way they are elected which they say would allow citizens to have a greater say in how the European Union is run.

The draft legislation plans for European voters to cast two votes, one to elect MEPs in national constituencies and another to elect 28 additional MEPs that would have the whole EU as their constituency.

They also want voters to be able to elect the European Commission president with each political group in the parliament putting forward a candidate during the election. The top job would then be given to the nominee from the group that secured the most seats.
