The government has been given the power to declare a state of emergency in the case of an armed conflict, war, or humanitarian disaster in a neighbouring country, as parliament adopted the tenth amendment to the constitution on Tuesday. The legislation was passed with 136 votes for and 36 against.

#COSTARICA: President Declares State Of Emergency After Ransomeware Attack Paralyzes Gov't

The Costa Rican President Rodrigo Chaves has declared a national emergency following cyber attacks from Conti ransomware group on multiple government bodies.

Tech observers say Conti published most of the 672 GB dump that appears to contain data belonging to the Costa Rican government agencies.

The declaration was signed into law by Chaves on Sunday, May 8th, same day as the economist and former Minister of Finance effectively became the country's 49th and current president.

#SRILANKA: Parliament Declares State Of Emergency

Sri Lanka’s Parliament on Monday approved a state of emergency declared by the president, who said it is needed to control food prices and prevent hoarding amid shortages of some staples.

Opposition lawmakers said the emergency declaration isn’t needed because other laws can be used to maintain essential supplies, and the tough emergency rules can be misused to stifle critics.

In recent weeks there have been shortages of essential items such as sugar, milk power and cooking gas. The government says the shortages were artificially created by hoarders.

#GERMANY: Merkel Given Controversial New Coronavirus Powers Stripped From States

The German parliament has approved changes to the Infection Protection Law meant to give Berlin more power over the country’s coronavirus restrictions, overruling vocal criticism from opposition parties, who accused Merkel of seeking dictatorial powers, akin to those not seen since World War II in Germany.

The measure would strip state capitals of certain decision-making abilities over measures like restricting private gatherings, closing schools and shops, imposing nighttime curfews and requiring employers to either offer coronavirus tests or ask employees to work from home.

#MALAYSIA: King Rejects Government's State Of Emergency Request

In the latest twist to Malaysia’s ongoing political saga, its King surprisingly rejected a controversial plan proposed by Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin to impose emergency measures on the country, after discussing the matter with other state monarchs.

Muhyiddin’s suggestion was ostensibly aimed at tackling the Covid-19 pandemic without political distractions. His opponents, however, claimed he no longer commanded a majority support in Parliament, and was using the pandemic as an excuse to stay in power.

#JAMAICA Crime Wave Prompts PM To Extend State Of Emergency In Kingston Area,

 A motion to extend the state of emergency recently declared in the Kingston Western and Kingston Central police divisions was approved in Parliament this evening.

Forty-four members voted to extend the State of Emergency. Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared a state of emergency in the divisions on June 14. It was to last for an initial period of 14 days.

Holness said the SOE was implemented due to increased criminal activities in the two divisions since the start of the year.

#JAPAN: Gov't Ends State Of Emergency

Japan this  week declared at least a temporary victory in its battle with COVID-19, and it triumphed by following its own playbook. It drove down the number of daily new cases to near target levels of 0.5 per 100,000 people with voluntary and not very restrictive social distancing and without large-scale testing.

Instead, the country focused on finding clusters of infections and attacking the underlying causes, which often proved to be overcrowded gathering spots such as gyms and nightclubs.

#SPAIN: Regional Governors Oppose Extending State Of Emergency

Several of Spain’s regional premiers told Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez on Sunday that they oppose another extension of the state of alarm that was implemented on March 14, a move that gave the central government extra powers to be used to deal with the coronavirus crisis.

The state of alarm must be approved by Congress every two weeks, and the current period is set to end on May 9.

#ETHIOPIA: Parliament Declares "State of Emergency" To Focus on "Masterminds of Conflict" In The Nation

The House of Peoples’ Representatives (HPR) in its first urgent meeting today has approved the state of emergency that was endorsed by the Council of Ministers on Feb. 16. After thoroughly debating on the matter, 395 of the 490 total attending members supported the approval and 88 opposed while 7 abstained. The state of emergency is declared to protect the constitution and constitutional order from threat and safeguard the well-being of citizens, which was unable with the regular law enforcement.

#TURKEY: Pres. Erdogan Won't End State Of Emergency Until "Peace & Prosperity" Achieved

#FRANCE: National Assembly Extends State Of Emergency Past 2017 Election

France’s parliament has voted to extend a national state of emergency until 15 July, after next year’s elections. The security measures, in force since attacks in Paris that killed 130 people in November 2015, are now expected to be approved by the Senate. It is the fifth extension of the state of emergency, which gives police extended powers of search and arrest.

Pres. Recep Tayyip Erdogan says Turkey‘s state-of-emergency could be extended by an additional three months when the current period expires in January. The emergency laws, which grant his administration sweeping powers, have been in effect since a failed coup attempt by a faction in the military in July. Under the laws, some 75,000 civil servants and members of the security forces have been purged and more than 37,000 arrested. Hundreds of associations and media outlets have been shuttered.

#IRAQ: State Of Emergency Declared As Shia Radicals Storm Parliament, Green Zone

Hundreds of Shia Muslim activists have stormed Iraq's parliament in Baghdad, in protest against continuing deadlock in approving a new cabinet. Supporters of radical Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr broke through barricades of the fortified Green Zone for the first time, after MPs failed to convene for a vote. A state of emergency was declared and security forces near the US embassy fired tear gas. Protesters now seem to leaving the parliament but camping outside.
