#BELARUS: Six-Term President Faces First Real Challenge In August Election

A forthcoming presidential election in Belarus, scheduled for August 9, looks set to be the liveliest and most competitive since the country secured its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko is seeking a sixth term in office. And some political observers are suggesting that Lukashenko might face a genuine challenge to his position for the first time, from at least two challengers.

#SUDAN: After Nearly 30 Years In Power, Pres. al-Bashir Steps Down As Party Leader; May Be Toppled

Sudan's embattled President Omar al-Bashir has resigned his position as chairman of the ruling party after more than two months of protests against his nearly three-decade rule, the party said. Some speculated that his actual grip on power may be slipping, and that his next step may be to step down.

According to a party statement released on Friday, al-Bashir delegated his powers as chairman of the National Congress Party to its deputy chairman, Ahmed Harun, until the party's next general conference. Al-Bashir is wanted by the International Criminal Court for alleged war crimes committed in Sudan's Darfur region.

#GAMBIA: Parliament Extends Pres. Jammeh's Term By 90 Days, Declares State Of Emergency

Gambia's parliament today extended Pres. Yahya Jammeh's term, which is due to end on Thursday following his defeat in elections, by 90 days. It also approved his decision to declare a 90-day state of emergency in the tiny West African state. Regional leaders have threatened to use military force to oust Jammeh if he refuses to hand power to President-elect Adama Barrow on Thursday.

#GAMBIA: Dictator Who Conceded Election Tries To Take Back Concession

Long-reigning Gambian Dictator Yahya Jammeh, who last week surprisingly conceded to his rival after a decisive victory, is now taking back his concession and is challenging the results. Some irregularities have narrowed his loss to newcomer Adama Barrow to 4 percentage points, but regional and world leaders are condemning his reversal, and say it could spark bloodshed, as the army splits into factions.

#GAMBIA: Authoritarian Pres. Jammeh Will Step Down After Defeat by Upstart Candidate

Yahya Jammeh, an authoritarian president who ruled for 22 years, has confirmed he will voluntarily step down after being beaten in an election by property developer Adama Barrow. "I will help him work towards the transition," Jammeh said on state TV, after speaking to the president-elect by telephone. Barrow, 51, who has never held political office, won last Thursday's election with 45.5% of the vote.

#THEPHILIPPINES: Protests Over Pres. Duterte's Plan To Give Hero's Funeral For Marcos

Hundreds have protested a plan of Pres. Rodrigo Duterte to use Manila cemetery to give a hero's burial to the dictator, who died in 1986. Police said about 1,500 protesters carrying a large streamer that read "Marcos not a hero" braved the rains, wind and mud at the seaside Rizal park, in Manila, on Sunday to call on Duterte to reconsider his decision.

#UGANDA: Non-Governmental Orgs Could Be Limited By New Legislation

A bill seeking to limit the work of Non-Governmental Organizations - many based in Western countries - is currently being discussed by Ugandan lawmakers. One of the bill's clauses vaguely states that NGOs must not engage activity "contrary to the dignity of the people of Uganda." The country has in the past cracked down on groups promoting homosexuality.

Opposition Leader Leopoldo López remains jailed by the Socialist regime, and ended a month-long hunger strike June 23 after elections were announced.

#SYRIA: Russia's #Putin Doubles Down On Support For Syria's Assad Regime

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a surprise meeting with the Syrian foreign minister, has pledged his support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. Syria's crisis, which began in March 2011, has killed more than 220,000 people. Russia has been seen as a key to a peaceful solution. Russia has rebuffed suggestions that Assad resign.

#SUDAN: Pres. Omar al-Bashir Extends 26-Year Reign With 95% Of Vote

Pres. Omar al-Bashir was re-elected with 94.5 per cent of the vote in a national election yesterday. Bashir, wanted by the International Criminal Court for war crimes, seized power in a 1989 Islamist-backed coup, and won re-election in a widely criticized 2010 election marred by an opposition boycott.

#USA: Potential Pres. Cand. Lindsey Graham Threatens Military Force Against Congress

In comments to Republicans in Concord, New Hampshire last week, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham - who is strongly considering a run for president - said he would "literally" employ the US military to force Congress to restore military and intelligence agency budget cuts, refusing to allow them to leave until they do. He later said he was joking.
