#BELARUS: Lukashenko Considers Invasion Of Ukraine, Euro Parliament Prepares Sanctions

The most recent statements by Belarus Pres. Alexander Lukashenko about the deployment of its troops to Ukraine and about "checking the combat readiness" of the Belarusian armed forces against Brussels were considered a sure sign that Minsk would launch a military offensive against Ukraine. 

Therefore, the European Parliament has called for the preparation of a new package of tough sanctions against the regime of Alexander Lukashenko, which will come into effect immediately when the Belarusian authorities begin an invasion of Ukraine.

#BELARUS: Sunday Referendum Will Decide On Nukes In Belarus

Belarus is holding a referendum to adopt a new constitution that would ditch its non-nuclear status, at a time when the country has become a launchpad for Russian troops invading Ukraine.

The vote on Sunday is almost certain to pass under the tightly controlled rule of President Alexander Lukashenko, bringing nuclear weapons back on Belarusian soil for the first time since the country gave them up after the fall of the Soviet Union.

#POLAND: Prime Minister Asks EU Help After Migrant Incursion From Belarus

Poland's border police have announced that about 50 migrants have made it across the border this past weekend into the EU from Belarus after forcing their way through fences and barriers, amid a standoff which has seen multiple thousands of migrants and asylum-seekers set up camps just meters from Polish guards. 

NATO must take "concrete steps" to resolve the migrant crisis on the Belarus border, the Polish prime minister was quoted as saying on Sunday, adding that Poland, Lithuania and Latvia may ask for consultations under Article 4 of the alliance's treaty.

#BELARUS: Parliament Blocks Migrant Crossings

Lawmakers in Belarus have voted to suspend an agreement with the European Union obliging the ex-Soviet nation to take back migrants that crossed its territory into the EU.

The vote in the upper house of the Belarusian parliament formalizes the move that was announced by Belarus' President Alexander Lukashenko in June.

#BELARUS: Mass Protests After Disputed Election

Protests broke out across Belarus on Sunday evening after an exit poll predicted an overwhelming victory for authoritarian incumbent President Aleksander Lukashenko.

Independent Belsat television showed large crowds being attacked by police in Minsk, amid reports that a few local polling stations were saying that in their counts opposition candidate Svetlana Tikhanovskaya was doing better than Lukashenko.

#BELARUS: Six-Term President Faces First Real Challenge In August Election

A forthcoming presidential election in Belarus, scheduled for August 9, looks set to be the liveliest and most  competitive since the country secured its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko is seeking a  sixth term in office.  And  some political observers are suggesting that Lukashenko might face a genuine challenge to his position for the first time, from at least two challengers.
