#UN: US Backs Singaporean, Defeats Chinese Candidate For UN Intellectual Property Head

A US campaign helped prevent China’s contender from taking the helm of the World Intellectual Property Organisation — and its trove of 250,000 patents — as part of wider efforts to curb Beijing’s influence at the UN.

Daren Tang, head of Singapore’s intellectual property office, was nominated Wipo’s incoming director-general subject to confirmation from the body’s general assembly in May. Tang defeated Wang Binying, currently a WIPO's deputy director and a former Beijing trade official, in a second round of voting with 55 votes to 28.

#VENEZUELA: Maduro Regime Wins Seat On UN Human Rights Commission

The government of President Nicolás Maduro won a seat Thursday on the U.N. Human Rights Council, a controversial victory for a regime accused of using intimidation, torture and murder to cling to power.

The Maduro government, no longer recognized as legitimate by the United States and around 50 other countries, had sought a return to the 47-member panel to counter an image of international isolation - and thwart investigations into its own alleged abuses.

#MACEDONIA: Parliament Adopts "North Macedonia" National Name To End Dispute With Greece

Macedonia's parliament has approved a constitutional amendment to change the country's name to the Republic of North Macedonia.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev narrowly secured the two-thirds majority to make the change, aimed at ending a 27-year dispute with Greece, which has its own region called Macedonia. The change opens up possible NATO and you and United Nations memberships.

#HONGKONG: Gov't Official Defends City-State's Human Rights Record After UN Panel's Criticism

Hong Kong’s second-ranking government official defended the city’s human rights record at a United Nations review session – a response non-governmental organizations have criticized as “evasive and disappointing." Chief Secretary for Administration Matthew Cheung spoke at the Universal Periodic Review for China in Geneva.

At the three-hour long session, representatives from around 150 countries gave comments and recommendations on the human rights situation in China, Hong Kong and Macau. The group condemned the government’s “irresponsible, wholesale denial” of human rights problems in Hong Kong.

#THEPHILIPPINES: Pres. Says Nation's Re-Election To UN Human Rights Council Vindicates Controversial Drug War

Granting the Philippines another three-year term on the UN. Human Rights Council has vindicated President Rodrigo Duterte’s crackdown on drugs and shown his detractors to be "morally corrupt," senior officials said. Human rights activists say Duterte's "war" on drugs after taking office in June 2016 – since when the police have killed more than 4,800 people – made his government unfit for a seat at the body. But the Philippines was re-elected to the 47-seat council by secret ballot at the UN. General Assembly last Friday, winning 165 out of 193 votes, with one abstention.

#POLAND: Foreign Min. Mocked For Accidentally Creating Nation of "San Escobar"

Poland’s foreign minister has become the subject of online derision after he misspoke and claimed he had met the representative of a non-existent country as part of Poland's campaign to get a non-permanent seat on the UN security council. Witold Waszczykowski was in New York to lobby for a seat on the council from 2018-19. He told reporters he held meetings with officials from several nations that had previously not been approached, giving as examples, "Belize or San Escobar.." The latter, as many people were quick to point out, does not exist. Social media erupted in mockery, creating a twitter feed and facebook page for the new nation, as well as a flag.

#CANADA: MP's Seeking UN To Vote Against China Seat On Human Rights Council

MPs from all major parties are calling for Canada to vote against major human rights abusers in their bid for seats on the UN Human Rights Council. The UN will vote Oct. 28 to select 14 countries for the 47-member Human Rights Council. Countries sit on the council for three years, with a crop of seats coming open every year. China, Cuba, Russia and Saudi Arabia all currently sit on the council and are all up for another term.

#UK: PM Theresa May Tells UN Nations Must Control Their Borders

Prime Minister Theresa May has called for a global clampdown on "uncontrolled migration", saying it is the right and the duty of countries to control their borders. At the UN summit in New York, May said the migration crisis had been "exacerbated" by "unprecedented" numbers of economic migrants. She urged a change in approach, saying refugees should claim asylum in the first safe country they reach. The UN says a record number of people have been displaced by conflict.
