#MACEDONIA: Parliament Adopts "North Macedonia" National Name To End Dispute With Greece

Macedonia's parliament has approved a constitutional amendment to change the country's name to the Republic of North Macedonia.

Prime Minister Zoran Zaev narrowly secured the two-thirds majority to make the change, aimed at ending a 27-year dispute with Greece, which has its own region called Macedonia. The change opens up possible NATO and you and United Nations memberships.

The Macedonian opposition Social Democratic Union has formally nominated Zoran Zaev to be its candidate for prime minister after securing enough support for a parliamentary majority. The party gained the support of the major ethnic-Albanian party following weeks of negotiations. Zaev will now be mandated by Pres. Gjorge Ivanov to form a new government.

Thousands gathered in Macedonia's capital, Skopje, to demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski Sunday, after the release of wiretapped conversations of more than 20,000 Macedonians. They hint at government corruption, including mismanagement of funds, spurious criminal prosecutions of opponents and even attempted cover-ups of killings.
