#BURKINAFASO: Military Gov't Extends Power Five Years

Burkina Faso's military government has announced it will extend junta rule for another five years.

The west African country's ruler, Capt Ibrahim Traoré, will also be able to contest the next presidential election, the state-owned broadcaster says.

When he seized power in a coup nearly two years ago, Capt Traore pledged to restore the civilian government by July 1st of this year.

#MYANMAR: Gov't Fires UN Ambassador After Defiant Anti-Coup Speech

Myanmar's ambassador to the United Nations has been fired, a day after he urged the UN to use 'any means necessary' to reverse the Feb. 1 coup. The envoy said he was speaking on behalf of the ousted civilian government. State television said Kyaw Moe Tun 'betrayed the country.'

BREAKING: #MYANMAR: Aung San Suu Kyi, Others Arrested By Military In Apparent Coup

Myanmar state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, President U Win Myint and other government officials are being held in custody by the military - according to multiple sources. 

"We have to assume that the military is staging a coup," a spokesman for Myanmar's ruling National League for Democracy Party says after the arrests.

The arrests come amid escalating tensions between the civilian government and the powerful military, triggering concerns of a coup.

The 75-year-old former civil rights campaigner, Aung San Suu Kyi, won national elections in 2015, and was allowed to form a government with the military's approval, which prompted some to call her a sell-out to the military government. Other parties also questioned the fairness of the 2015 elections.

#THAILAND: Future Forward Party Leader Fighting Charges Of Sedition Against The King

The leader of a new political party that gained prominence in Thailand's election last month has been charged with sedition. Thanathorn is part of the opposition alliance trying to unseat the military junta.

Thanathorn Juangroongruangkit, the leader of Thailand's progressive Future Forward Party, is denying charges of sedition filed against him by the ruling military government, and accuses the junta of trying to break up his party.

His anti-junta movement came third in March's elections after campaigning on a pledge to oust army chief Prayuth Chan-oocha, who has kept a tight grip on power since a 2014 coup. A guilty conviction could cost the 40-year-old Thanathorn his seat in parliament, delivering a blow to an alliance of opposition parties trying to form a government. The party, formed in March, 2018, won 18% of the votes and 87 seats in the nation's 500-seat parliament in this March's election.

#CAMBODIA: Supreme Court Outlaws Main Opposition Party Ahead Of 2018 Elections

Cambodia's Supreme Court has dissolved the country's main opposition party, leaving the government with no significant competitor ahead of elections next year. The Cambodia National Rescue Party was accused of plotting to topple the government - charges it denies, and describes as politically motivated. More than 100 party members are now banned from politics for five years. Cambodia's Prime Minister, Hun Sen, has ruled for 32 years.
