The leader of Sweden’s incumbent Social Democrats has resigned as prime minister after conceding defeat in the country’s knife-edge election, handing victory to a loose bloc of rightwing parties that includes the far-right Sweden Democrats (SD).

The PM, Magdalena Andersson, called a press conference at which she accepted defeat, while pointing out that her Social Democrats remained Sweden’s largest party with more than 30% of the vote – and that the majority in parliament for the right bloc was very slim.

The election in September resulted in a one-seat difference between the Social Democrats and Moderates, as the anti-migration Sweden Democrats made hefty gains. Now the chance to form a government has reverted to the Social Democrats, who have until October 29 to scrounge up the votes to create a government.

#SWEDEN: Gov't Of Prime Min. Stefan Löfven Ousted By "No Confidence" Vote Following Election

Sweden’s center-right parties and the populist Sweden Democrats have united to oust the country’s prime minister, Stefan Löfven, in a mandatory no-confidence vote after elections that left neither main political bloc with a majority. That means that Löfven, whose center-left bloc won 144 seats in parliament on September 9 to the center-right’s 143, will have to step down eventually but will stay in office temporarily until a new government can be formed. That process could take several weeks. It's up to the speaker of parliament Andreas Norlén will ask another party leader to try to form a government.

#SWEDEN: Support For Anti-Immigration Sweden Democrats Rises Sharply In Polls Ahead Of Sept. Election

The Sweden Democrats, an anti-immigration party, have gained momentum and are close behind the nation's two other largest parties ahead of the September 9th general election, according to a survey. With 20% in support, according to Ipsos, the party is gaining on the conservative Moderates (22%) and is now only four points behind Prime Minister Stefan Löfven's Social Democrats (24%).

#SWEDEN: Opposition Moderates Slide In Recent Polling

New polling shows Sweden's largest opposition party, the Moderates, sliding to only 17.6% backing from voters, the worst they've polled since the 2014 election, and less than the 23.3% they won in the last election. The Moderates dropped 2.2% in the poll between February and March, following it announced it would be willing to form a coalition with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.
