#NEWZEALAND: PM Jacinda Ardern To Resign, Citing Burnout

[world politics news]

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern, who became a global icon of the Left, said Thursday she was leaving office after five and a half years. She cited burnout as a reason for her leaving office, stating in a press conference, "I no longer have enough in the tank," to continue in office.

Ardern was facing mounting political pressures at home and a level of criticism from some that hadn't been experienced by previous New Zealand leaders.

Some political pundits said that her star was waning and her popularity was fading.

The largest gatherings could draw hundreds of participants, especially in the capital, Suva, prompting increased security.

The upcoming vote will be Fiji's third general election since the 2006 coup led by incumbent Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who obtained a slim majority, with just over 50% of the total vote during the 2018 elections.

Bougainville Delegates Left Waiting After Independence Referendum

[world politics news]

Last December, 97.7% of the Pacific island of Bougainville voted in a non-binding referendum to break away from Papua New Guinea.

The two governments were them to consult and take the results to the parliament of Papua New Guinea for final decision.

But a delegation from Bougainville was recently kept waiting in a Papua New Guinea hotel for days without a substantial meeting.

The deferred meeting left a bad taste in one delegate's mouth.

“The deferral … is a reflection of so much inconsistency and lack of real commitment from the PNG government to engage,” says Joseph Watawi, a long-time Bougainville politician currently with the consultation team.
