London voters have decisively elected Sadiq Kahn of the Labour Party as its mayor, the first Asian and first Muslim to hold the position. He defeated Conservative Zac Goldsmith 44 to 35%, favored by incumbent Mayor Boris Johnson, who held the position for two four-year terms. Kahn was unsuccessfully painted as an extremist because he had defended Islamic radicals as a human rights lawyer.
