[world politics news]

Australian Greens in parliament have refused to support a motion by prime Minister Anthony Albanese to condemn Hamas, the group that attacked Israel and that is still holding civilian hostages.  The motion passed 135-4.

Adam Bandt, Max Chandler-Mather, Stephen Bates and Elizabeth Watson-Brown are the only MPs who voted against the motion.

Germany’s Green party suffered its worst electoral defeat in a regional election since teaming up with the Social Democrats (SPD) and the Free Liberals (FDP) in a nationwide coalition in Berlin in 2021.

#GERMANY: Green Plans To Ban Stoves Rejected At Polls In Bremen Local Election

[world politics news]

The German Green party has endured another disappointing election night in the country’s smallest state, Bremen, as voters voice concerns about the social consequences of green transformation projects, including the plan to ban gas stoves, a proposal that proved deeply unpopular with the state's voters.

The northern city state’s incumbent Social Democratic party mayor, Andreas Bovenschulte, emerged ahead in projected results from Sunday’s poll published by the local statistics office, with about 29.5% of the vote. This gives the centre-left the option to either continue governing with the Greens and the left-wing Die Linke, or form a “grand coalition” with the second-placed conservatives.

#EU: French Greens Will Oppose Market areforms To Emissions Plan

[world politics news]

In December, negotiators from the European Parliament, the Commission and EU member states reached agreement on the reformed Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), the EU’s carbon market and flagship climate policy tool.

A key sticking point in the reformed ETS was a proposal to extend carbon pricing to heating and transport fuels, such as petrol, diesel, heating oil and gas, which will start applying as of 2027.

The new carbon tax is expected to add 10 eurocents to the price of petrol, but its impact will be softened by the introduction of a new social climate fund worth €87 billion.

The French Greens are expected to oppose the reformed ETS, and it is unclear whether their socialist counterparts in S&D, who in France are part of the left-wing alliance NUPES, will follow them or not.

#AUSTRALIA: Australia Day Attacked By The Left

[world politics news]

Yesterday was Australia Day, traditionally a day of celebration, commenting the settlement of the nation by Capt. James Cook. But in recent years, aboriginal rights activists and others have begun critiquing the day, calling it "Invasion Day" much like those on the American Left say about Columbus Day and Thanksgiving.

Senator Lidia Thorpe of the state of Victoria, herself of aboriginal blood and a Green Party member, said in an editorial posted yesterday:

"This Invasion Day, remember that Yorta Yorta man William Cooper called for January 26 to be acknowledged as a Day of Mourning in 1937. Remember what we’re grieving. Fight alongside us to heal this country.White Australia has a Blak future."

"Yesterday, she posted on Twitter:
Janurary 25th was our last day of peace in this country. It’s a day to acknowledge what was, prior to invasion. Prior to the war against our Country and our people. Use this moment to remember what we’re fighting for, tomorrow and everyday, until we have a Treaty in this Country."

But conservative commentator Alexandra Marshall shot back:

"Lidia Thorpe declared war on the Australian people today and I'm struggling to understand why she's allowed to sit as a Senator...

Surely making declarations of war against the taxpayer violates her public employment???"

Ultra conservative One Nation Party founder Pauline Hanson condemned a proposal to tax European descended Australians to pay reparations to indigenous Australians:

"One Nation strongly condemns a proposal supported by Greens indigenous affairs spokesperson Lidia Thorpe for non-indigenous Australians to pay a race based rent tax."

#AUSTRALIA: Green Party Wants $19 Billion To Transition Coal Miners To Other Jobs

[world politics news]

The Green Party has proposed a $19bn plan to diversify fossil fuel-reliant towns and subsidize the wages of coal workers who transition into new jobs, saying employees can stay in mining but should seek employment in critical minerals or green metals.

Green Party Leader Adam Bandt, said the nation owed something to coal workers.

“We owe coal workers a debt of thanks for powering our country. We don’t need to choose between taking urgent climate action and supporting coal communities. We can do both.”

#GERMANY: Merkel Era Ends As Social Democrats Win Election

[world politics news]

Germany's center-left Social Democrats (SPD) have claimed victory in the federal election, telling the party of outgoing Chancellor Angela Merkel it should no longer be in power.

SPD leader Olaf Scholz said he had a clear mandate to form a government, while his conservative rival Armin Laschet remains determined to fight on.

The two parties have governed together for years. But Scholz says it is time for a new coalition with the Greens and liberals.

Such a coalition is likely to continue dismantling Germany's nuclear and coal fired plants in favor of arguably less reliable renewable energy sources.

#UK: Green Party Politician Suggests 6 PM Curfew For Men To Reduce Violence

[world politics news]

A Green Party politician in Britain has called for all men to be subject to a 6 pm curfew to protect women and "lessen discrimination".

Green Party peer Baroness Jenny Jones made the comments in a House of Lords debate on domestic violence.

She later revealed that her proposal had received a torrent of abuse from men on Twitter:

"Since my comments about a curfew for men to keep women safe, I've had a deluge of misogynistic emails and tweets. Which rather proves my point about the problem being with men ..."

#AUSTRALIA: Senate, House Defeat Green's Move To Declare "Climate Emergency"

[world politics news]

Liberal and Labor Party senators have combined forces to block a Climate Emergency declaration in Australia, on the day New Zealand has declared a climate emergency at their Labour Prime Minister’s request.

The Australian Greens put Climate Emergency Declaration motions before the House and Senate, with the Government blocking the vote in the House, and Labor and the Government blocking in the Senate.

Green Party's Leader in the Senate, Larissa Waters, took to Twitter to denounce both parties, "This fossil-fuel addicted Govt is now moving to stop the parliament debating whether to declare a climate emergency. They rail against “disruption:" just wait til they see what the climate has in store for us! Shamefully, Labor is supporting the gag. Greens won’t give up!"

#FRANCE: Amid Low Turnout, Greens Make Gains In Local Elections Across the Country

[world politics news]

France's Green party and its left-wing allies have made significant gains in the second round of local elections. Lyon, Strasbourg, Bordeaux and Besançon all voted for the party on a bad night for President Emmanuel Macron. His centrist LREM party, which has less support at local level than nationally, failed to win in any major city.

Voters were required to wear face masks under continuing measures to stop the spread of coronavirus and turnout hit a record low. Only roughly 40% of the electorate took part in the poll on Sunday.

#IRELAND: Greens Propose "National Unity Gov't" To Confront Coronavirus

[world politics news]

The Green Party has effectively ruled out joining the Fine Gael and Fianna Fáíl pertirs in a coalition for now and instead has called for a national unity Government involving all elected members of Parliament.

The Green’s 12 TDs met today to discuss their options for building a coalition.

In a statement, the party said it wants a national unity Government to be put in place and then reviewed in three months. It said its reasoning for this was the ongoing coronavirus crisis. Ireland's parties remain in talks to form a government a month after elections effectively created a three-way tie between the three major parties.

#SWEDEN: "Hippie" Culture Minister Says She Smoked Pot "Twice" But Wouldn't Now; Must Have "Restrictive" Drug Policy

[world politics news]

Saying she wants to get the "corpses out of the closet" before they're discovered by others, Sweden's new Culture Minister Amanda Lind says she smoked cannabis (pot) twice, but doesn't anymore. "Others may judge whether it is a big or a small thing," she said. "I wouldn't do it today. We must have a restrictive drug policy."

The Green Party member of parliament joined the Social Democratic Party cabinet of Prime Minister Stefan Löfven late last month. She succeeds MP Alice Bah Kuhnke, who is now a candidate for the European Parliament.

Moderate Party MP Hanif Bali joked on Twitter, "I look forward to having a hippie as Minister of Culture. Incense, chakra massage and tons of weed in the ministry." Lind, a licensed psychologist, has studied herbal alternative medicine, acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
