Approval for Chancellor Angela Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union and its sister party, Bavaria’s Christian Social Union, has plunged to its lowest level since 2006, according to a new poll. Support for Merkel’s coalition dropped to just 29%, down from 33% in last September’s election. Her conservatives have been embroiled in an internal dispute over whether to turn back migrants at the German border who have registered elsewhere in the European Union. Mass demonstrations are planned against her leadership in September.
