#INDONESIA: Vote On Bill Banning Pre-Marital & Gay Sex Delayed After Mass Protests

Thousands of students protested at rallies across Indonesia on Monday against a new criminal code that would outlaw sex outside marriage and gay sex, as lawmakers met the president to discuss how to proceed with a bill that has divided Indonesians.

President Joko Widodo on Friday ordered a delay in a planned vote on the controversial bill – originally slated for Tuesday – and said 14 articles needed further review before it was deliberated by a new parliament, whose term begins next month.

#ISRAEL: After Days-Long Count, Election Results "Almost" In; Show Opposition Beat Netanyahu

Israel's Central Election Committee says it has "almost" completed final results from last weekend's election. Results so far confirmed that opposition leader Benny Gantz’s Blue and White Party had won 33 seats in the Knesset while Prime Minister  Benjamin Netanyahu’s Likud had won 31 seats.

The committee explained that the results cannot be considered official, since official results will only be presented to President Reuven Rivlin and published on September 25.

Justin Trudeau, Canada’s prime minister, wore brownface makeup to a party at the private school where he was teaching in the spring of 2001. TIME magazine has obtained a photograph of the incident.
The picture was taken at an “Arabian Nights”-themed school party. It shows Trudeau, then the 29-year-old son of the late former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, wearing a turban and robes with his face, neck and hands completely darkened.

Trudeau, facing re-election next month, apologized and said it was "a dumb thing to do." “It was something that I didn’t think was racist at the time, but now I recognize it was something racist to do and I am completely sorry."

OPPOSITION REACTION: Opposition party leaders pounced on this latest scandal for the prime minister, just weeks before the October election.

Conservative Party Leader Andrew Scheer said he was, "extremely shocked and disappointed when I learned of Justin Trudeau's actions. It was just as racist in 2001 as it is in 2019." He said Trudeau had demonstrated that he was, "not fit to govern this country." New Democratic Party Leader Jagmeet Singh said, "It's troubling. It's really, it's insulting."

People's Party Leader Maxime Bernier had perhaps the most caustic reaction, Tweeting, "I’m not going to accuse Justin Trudeau  of being a racist. But he’s the master of identity politics and the [Liberal Party] just spent months accusing everyone of being white supremacists. He definitely is the biggest hypocrite in the country."

#CANADA: #Ontario's Gov't Lost $42 Million Selling Marijuana

Ontario Cannabis Retail Corp. lost C$42 million in the latest fiscal year, according to newly released public documents.

The government-run provincial Crown corporation tasked with online sales and wholesale distribution of recreational pot reported revenues of $64 million for the year ended March 31, 2019. However, Ontario's consolidated financial statements show the OCRC, which operates as the Ontario Cannabis Store, racked up expenses totaling $106 million during the period.

Canada legalized cannabis for adult use on Oct. 17 last year, and the rollout was mired by supply chain issues and product shortages, which largely have been resolved in recent months.

#ISRAEL: Election Re-Run Ends With Deadlock Again; Opposition Makes Historic Gains

The election that was supposed to break a national political deadlock has ended in another deadlock, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud Party coming up short in parliamentary seats to form a majority government, and Benny Gantz's Blue and White Party tying him in seats.

Now, both must seek a coalition with smaller parties to try to form a government. Netanyahu promised  he would build the next government in a speech to his supporters at Expo Tel Aviv, after 3 a.m. early Wednesday morning. Benny Gantz vowed to do the same.

Amid chants of "no to a unity government," (with Gantz's party) the prime minister said all of the Likud’s current coalition partners want to build a coalition.

#SOUTHAFRICA: President Apologizes On Behalf Of His Country For Xenophobic Violence

President Cyril Ramaphosa has said the heckling he received while paying tribute at the memorial service of late Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe was aimed not at him, but the entire country, following weeks of violence aimed at foreign residents in South Africa.

Ramaphosa was addressing a clothing worker's union meeting at the Durban International Convention Center, when he said he was the target of collective anger towards South Africa. 

“The people of Zimbabwe, in unison, expressed their unhappiness against South Africans and they saw me as representing all of us in South Africa. The whole stadium booed me. It was only after I said I regret what happened in this country that they then responded positively. I have apologized on your behalf and I hope it sinks into our consciousness,” said Ramaphosa.

He said South Africa's image and standing had been “negatively affected” in the eyes of the international community and that the country would have to work hard to reverse perceptions.

Members of the European Union Parliament on Friday called for trade and travel sanctions on India over the alarming human rights situation in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

The Co-Chair of the Friends of Kashmir Group in the EU parliament, Richard Corbett, reportedly called for utilizing all possible means to mount pressure on India to ease the military curfew in occupied Kashmir.

He proposed the imposition of trade sanctions on New Delhi and restrictions on the travel of those involved in committing human rights violations and acts of terrorism in Indian-occupied Kashmir.

#UKRAINE: Legislature Passes Bill On Financial Re-Structuring

Ukraine's parliament, the Verkhovna Rada, has approved a bill on introducing amendments to some laws to improve the procedure of financial restructuring in Ukraine.

The proposed law eliminates  shortcomings of the current legislation and introduces amendments to the laws ‘On financial restructuring’, ‘On mortgage’ and ‘On securing creditors' claims and registration of encumbrances.

The document envisages a joint financial restructuring procedure for several debtors who are related parties but have different creditors. Also, the bill proposes that the operation of the Law of Ukraine ‘On financial restructuring’ be extended for six years.

#BRAZIL: Negotiations Begin On Brazil/Mexico Free Trade Agreement

The Brazilian government have announced that it had begun negotiations for a free trade agreement with Mexico, a pact that would be between the two biggest economies in Latin America.

The two countries began formal talks this week and it is hoped that the South American country will be able to increase trade with Mexico, mainly in agricultural products, Marcos Troyjo, special secretary for Foreign Trade and International Affairs at Brazil's Ministry of Economy, told reporters.

He explained that the exchanges are part of his government's efforts to open up its economy and be able to negotiate with all countries. A free trade agreement between the two countries for the import of automobiles and auto parts came into force in mid-March.

#CANADA: New Democrats Propose 1% "Wealth Tax" To Fund Platform Promises

The New Democratic Party’s proposed wealth tax, a centerpiece of funding the party’s election platform, could raise nearly $70 billion over the next 10 years, Canada’s budget watchdog has found.

The “super-wealth tax,” as the NDP is calling it, is similar to an idea promoted by U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren, and is part of the NDP’s campaign focus on tax fairness and inequality.

The party wants to apply a 1% tax to fortunes worth more than $20 million. Unlike a tax on income, a wealth tax would apply to all assets, including real estate, with the aim of reducing economic inequality.

Pres. Vladimir Putin’s United Russia Party has sensationally lost a THIRD of its seats in Moscow in a local election bloodbath.

Sunday’s election was one of the most closely watched regional elections in years after many opposition candidates were excluded triggering the capital’s biggest protests in nearly a decade.

The vote was seen by outspoken opposition politician Alexei Navalny and his allies as an opportunity to make inroads against United Russia ahead of the 2021 national election.

Protests erupted in mid-July after the Central Election Commission refused to register a large number of opposition candidates, saying they had failed to collect enough signatures from genuine backers.

#RUSSIA: Putin's Candidates Running As "Independents" In Local Elections To Avoid Tarnished Party Brand

Ahead of Sunday’s nationwide regional elections, Russia’s most prominent opposition leader, Alexei Navalny, is urging voters dissatisfied with the status quo to cast the ruling United Russia party out of power.

Anti-government anger is bearing results. Four of the ruling United Russia Party’s candidates lost gubernatorial elections last September. In order to avoid a repeat - and to capitalize on voter discontent - the party's candidates for Sunday's nationwide local and regional elections are running as independents, effectively camouflaging their party ID.

To combat this, Navalny has launched a website exposing the names of these United Russia candidates and also the names of true independents.

#IRELAND: One Quarter Of Special Needs Students Sent Home Early To "Manage" Them

Opposition parties are condemning the practice, revealed in a new study, of schools sending students with behavioral problems and special needs home from school early to "manage" them.

Education Minister Joe McHugh called the practice "unacceptable," but did not say if he was taking any fresh steps to ensure the practice is monitored or to be subject to new restrictions.

The study by academics at Technological University Dublin, and commissioned by Inclusion Ireland, found the practice was largely hidden and, in many, cases illegal.

#HONGKONG: Controversial Mainland China Extradition Bill Withdrawn After Weeks Of Violent Protests

Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam has said she will withdraw the controversial extradition bill which triggered months of protests.

The proposal, introduced in April, would have allowed criminal suspects to be extradited to mainland China.

The bill was suspended in June when Ms Lam called it "dead", but she stopped short of withdrawing it.

Full withdrawal is one of five key demands of protesters, who are also calling for full democratic rights.

#JAPAN: Lawmaker Who Suggested War With Russia Suggests War With South Korea

#GERMANY: Anti-Merkel Populists Make Gains In Two State Elections

Chancellor Angela Merkel's hold on power was dealt a huge blow when support for her conservatives and Social Democrat (SPD) coalition partners bled support to the far right in two state elections - a double blow to her already unstable ruling alliance.

Merkel's Christian Democrats remained the largest party in Saxony, but saw their share of the vote drop by 7.4 points from the 2014 election to 32% with the populist Alternative for Germany Party almost tripling it's vote and coming in second.

The AfD harnessed voter anger over refugees and the planned closure of coal mines in the eastern states.
