#JAMAICA: Government Pilot Program Sends Some Students Back To School In Novermber

After two planned reopening of physical school structures were beaten back by the onslaught of the novel coronavirus pandemic, the government has decided to pilot the resumption of face-to-face classes with 17 institutions across nine Jamaican parishes.

The pilot will run for two weeks — from November 9 to 20 — in 12 primary schools and five high schools in the parishes of Clarendon, Manchester, Portland, St Ann, St Elizabeth, St James, Westmoreland, St Thomas, and Trelawny. More than 5, 000 students are enrolled in the selected institutions.

The selected schools are yet to be named.

#JAMAICA Crime Wave Prompts PM To Extend State Of Emergency In Kingston Area,

 A motion to extend the state of emergency recently declared in the Kingston Western and Kingston Central police divisions was approved in Parliament this evening.

Forty-four members voted to extend the State of Emergency. Prime Minister Andrew Holness declared a state of emergency in the divisions on June 14. It was to last for an initial period of 14 days.

Holness said the SOE was implemented due to increased criminal activities in the two divisions since the start of the year.

#JAMAICA: Former MP Tells Of Death Threats

A former member of Jamaica's parliament has opened up about some of the measures that were employed to keep her safe amid a slew of death threats over the four years she served as a lawmaker.

Heather Robinson, the one-term parliamentary representative for what was then St Catherine South Central, recounted that the threats against her life were based on police intelligence. None of the threats, she acknowledged, were made directly or by telephone.

But they were credible enough that at one point, she was assigned two police bodyguards, Robinson recalled.

#JAMAICA: Gov't Produces Resource Manual For Victims Of Human Trafficking

The Government is taking steps to enhance its anti-human trafficking profile through the development of a Human Trafficking Survivors’ Handbook and Human Trafficking e-Learning platform.

The tools were produced by the Office of the National Rapporteur on Trafficking in Persons and the Office of the Children’s Advocate, partnership with the British High Commission in Jamaica. The handbook provides information on the rights of persons affected by human trafficking. It also provides a directory of providers of relevant and easily accessible information on services available in Jamaica to address the varying needs of victims.
