During the 32-day campaign, Tory Leader Tim Houston unveiled a left-leaning platform that promised hundreds of millions of dollars in the first year of the party's mandate to increase the number of family doctors, bolster the mental health system and create more nursing home beds.

#CANADA: Nova Scotia Passes Tough New Animal Cruelty Laws; Makes Cat Declawing Illegal

The province of Nova Scotia earlier this month passed strong new animal protection legislation, becoming the first province in the country to make cat declawing illegal. The new laws also put an end to tail docking, ear cropping, devocalizing dogs, and other unnecessary cosmetic surgeries on companion animals. Those who declaw cats or otherwise mutilate animals for cosmetic reasons could face up to six months in jail and a $25,000 fine for a first offence.

Nova Scotia's opposition parties have officially launched their campaigns in anticipation of an election call that could come as soon as this weekend thanks to an apparent gaffe by the governing Liberal party. Progressive Conservative Leader Jamie Baillie was greeted by cheers as he took the stage before scores supporters at a campaign rally in Dartmouth, N.S., on Saturday. It didn't take long for him to poke fun at his opponents' seeming campaign misfire Friday, when the Liberals released — and promptly pulled — a video advertising a May 30 election date.

#CANADA: Nova Scotia's Green Party Folds After Membership Disappears, No Leaders Step Up

The Green Party of Nova Scotia has shut down, blaming its end on an inactive membership and a lack of leadership candidates. "We cannot force people to engage. Nor can we continue to operate without the active engagement of our members," wrote interim Party Leader Brynn Nheiley.

#CANADA: Nova Scotia's Legislators Want To Make It Easier To Vote In Local Elections

Citizens who have moved from one town to another within Nova Scotia three months before a local election will be able to vote, shortened from a previous six month wait, if a newly introduced provincial bill passes. The reform also allows voters to register to vote up to three days before next October's municipal elections. Previously, they had to register before September 1.
