Massive anti-government demonstrations continue throughout Cuba, protesting severe shortages of food and medicine, as well as the general lack of freedom and democracy.
The Cuban government announced Friday that they will lift restrictions so travelers to the island nation will be able to bring in unlimited food, medicines and hygiene products without paying customs duties, a measure taken after Cubans took to the street Sunday to ask for food, medicines, and the end of the dictatorship.
Former President Raul Castro -who officially retired in April— took part in a high level government meeting on Cuba’s protests.
American politicians spoke out in favor of the protests.
Texas Sen. Ted Cruz
tweeted Friday:
"The communist dictatorship in Cuba is
evil, it is oppressive, they are murderers, and they are torturers. The Cuban people want freedom!"
Pres. Joe Biden released a statement in support of the Cuban people as well.
"We stand with the Cuban people and their clarion call for freedom and relief from the tragic grip of the pandemic and from the decades of repression and economic suffering to which they have been subjected by Cuba's authoritarian regime."
The EU’s foreign policy spokesman has condemned the “unacceptable” arrests of political activists and journalists in Cuba, calling for their release.
