Located more than 680 miles northwest of Denmark's capital, Copenhagen, the Faroe Islands have since 1948 had their own white, blue and red flag with an offset cross, their own language originating from the Viking's Old Norse and institutions and culture. With its breathtakingly green and high mountains covered by fog and inhabited by more sheep than people, the island territory is now weighing the idea of pushing its autonomy to full independence. The Faroese parliament voted to secede from Denmark in 1946, but the vote was not recognized by the Danish government.

Also running are former foreign minister Jose Manuel Garcia Margallo, 73, and Pablo Casado, a 37-year-old party spokesman and rising star. The first round of voting will be held on July 5.

Hungary’s parliament has passed a package of legislation making helping asylum seekers punishable with up to a year in prison. The legislation swept through a lower house of parliament dominated by the ruling Fidesz Party, in a 160 to 18 vote. Under the provisions of the "Stop Soros law," it becomes a criminal offence to carry out "organisational activities" that assist immigrants not entitled to protection with asylum requests, and to help people “residing illegally in Hungary” to get a residence permit.

Spain's culture and sports minister Maxim Huerta has resigned after it emerged he has been fined for tax fraud, in a blow to the Socialist government that took over only last week. Huerta, an award-winning author and television celebrity, evaded €218,322 ($256,462) in tax between 2006-2008 by using a shell company. A court last year ordered that he pay over €360,000 to the tax office -- the amount he tried to evade plus fines and interest payments, it added.

Taiwan prosecutors indicted the spokesman for a pro-China political party, his father, and two other members for allegedly seeking to recruit Taiwan military officers on behalf of China and violating the National Security Act.
