CANADA: Gov't Exends Foreign Housing Purchase Ban to 2027

The federal government is extending its ban on foreign home purchasing in Canada, Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced in a release on Sunday.

The rule, which was first announced in 2022, will now be extended until the beginning of 2027. It bans foreign nationals and commercial enterprises from buying residential property in Canada, with exceptions for some international students, refugee claimants and temporary workers.

#NEWZEALAND: PM Ardern Releases Plan To House The Homeless

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is promising to fix New Zealand's housing crisis and has unveiled new details of her Government's state housing plan.

The country's home waiting list continues to balloon – nearly 22,500 people are now on the public housing waiting list.

Ardern became prime minister in August, 2017. This is not the first time she has tackled a big issue. In 2018 she introduced the Child Poverty Reduction Act. But critics say her government has failed to tackle child poverty effectively. 

An annual report card released by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef), in early September, compared the performances of 41 high-income countries on child welfare issues, from suicide rates to childhood obesity, education and environment. New Zealand is at the bottom third in 35th place.

#UK: Labour Party Proposes Tough Renter Protections Against Landlords

The Labour Party is proposing tough new standards protecting renters if they are elected in the next general election. Landlords who fail to meet the "tougher" minimum standards would face fines of up to £100,000. The proposals include requirements for safe wiring and appliances, freedom from damp and general good repair. The Conservatives said the plan could increase people's rent.

#IRELAND: Minister Says Airbnb Rentals Should Be Subject To Bed & Breakfast Regs

Minister for Housing Simon Coveney has announced that landlords in Ireland cannot rent their properties for short-term housing using Airbnb unless they get planning permission for bed and breakfast or hotel status. Coveney said landlords should have to "go through the procedures that every other B&B must go through, including standards, inspections and tax treatment."

The bill has widespread support among the majority right-wing coalition, the Democratic Unity Roundtable, but is fiercely opposed by President Nicolas Maduro.

#NORWAY: Legislation Would Penalize Those Who Rent to Illegal Immigrants; Allow Private Evictions

Norwegian Progress Party politician Erlend Wiborg plans to introduce harsh penalties for citizens who provides housing to illegal immigrants. The legislation would allow land owners to remove illegal immigrants residing in their property without a court order. Those who do not remove immigrants could risk up to five years in prison.

Another 10 billion yuan ($1.6 billion) was pledge last week for infrastructure construction in shantytown renovation at a meeting of the State Council, China's cabinet. China has dedicated 149.4 billion Yuan to shantytown rebuilding this year, and 36.5 billion Yuan toward renovating rural housing. Overall, China is budgeting 477.6 billion Yuan of its 2.2 trillion Yuan central budget on housing renovation.

#AUSTRALIA: Gov't To Halt First-Time Home Buying Plan

The Federal Government has taken the axe to a generous Rudd-era savings scheme for first home buyers, but will lift restrictions on the ability for account holders to access their money. The Government says it will save $134.3 million over five years by abolishing First Home Savers Accounts, which were introduced in 2008 to help first home buyers save.
