Upset with party leader Tom Mulcair's low profile after the New Democrat's crushing defeat last year, party insiders are said to be planning to oust him soon or force his resignation. He had previously agreed to resign next October, but some inside the party said he has "gone missing" and his low profile is hurting the party's image. His pleasant, grandfatherly demeanor and lack of passion - especially during national debates - are blamed by some for his poor showing and that of his party last year against the young, charming Justin Trudeau.

In a dramatic rejection of Tom Mulcair's time as leader of the federal NDP, delegates gathered in Edmonton for the party's convention voted in favor of launching a new leadership race on Sunday. Delegates voted 52% to 48% to proceed with the leadership election, Mulcair taking far less than the 70% required to remain leader.

Canadians went to the polls yesterday and elected a Liberal majority government and a new Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, ending 10 years of Conservative government under PM Stephen Harper. The New Democratic Party, once seen as a contender, crumbled into distant Third Party status.

The size of the liberal victory was substantial, winning 184 seats to the Conservatives' 99, with the New Democratic Party winning 44. The Bloc Québécois won 10 (it's leader Gilles Duceppe didn't win his seat) and the Greens took just one seat, that of that leader, Elizabeth May.
