He's been given the chance to try to form a new government, following a failed attempt by the conservative Moderates Party earlier this month. The election in September resulted in a one-seat difference between the Social Democrats and Moderates, as the anti-migration Sweden Democrats made hefty gains. Now the chance to form a government has reverted to the Social Democrats, who have until October 29 to scrounge up the votes to create a government.

#SWEDEN: Moderate Party Picks Pragmatic New Leader After Election Disappointment

Sweden’s biggest opposition party, the Moderates, have a new leader, after Ulf Kristersson was picked to follow Anna Kinberg Batra. The former Minister for Social Security has been the party's economic policy spokesperson in opposition. He was the only candidate chosen by a nominating committee and was unanimously backed for the top job. He replaces Kinberg Batra, who was leader from January 2015 until she was ousted by her party in August following poor performances in polls. In his first speech as leader, Kristersson promised to be pragmatic in order to solve Sweden’s challenges, calling his approach "values-based pragmatism."

#SWEDEN: Opposition Moderates Slide In Recent Polling

New polling shows Sweden's largest opposition party, the Moderates, sliding to only 17.6% backing from voters, the worst they've polled since the 2014 election, and less than the 23.3% they won in the last election. The Moderates dropped 2.2% in the poll between February and March, following it announced it would be willing to form a coalition with the anti-immigration Sweden Democrats.
