#RUSSIA: After Opinion Piece By Putin, New Openness By EU For "Partnership"

After Russian President Vladimir Putin published an op-ed in the German weekly newspaper Die Zeit which urged openness to positive Russia-Europe relations toward "partnership" and not confrontation - an op-ed wherein he dubbed NATO "a relic of the Cold War" - there are fresh, somewhat unexpected reports that Germany and France are now urging a new EU strategy for "closer engagement" with Moscow.

#RUSSIA: Duma Strips Immunity From Only Opponent Of Crimea Annexation

The Russian State Duma voted to strip opposition deputy Ilya Ponomarev of his powers for not fulfilling his duties or participating in parliamentary votes since 2014. The vote concluded with 413 deputies for and three against. Ponomarev was the only deputy in the Duma who voted against the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014. When he traveled to California soon after, his bank accounts were frozen and he was allegedly prohibited from traveling abroad. He has not returned to Russia since then.

#LITHUANIA: Parliament's Website Comes Under Cyber Attack During Discussion Of Crimean Tartars

Lithuania’s parliamentary website came under cyber attack just as an April 11 special session of the World Congress of Crimean Tartars was meeting to discuss mass violations of human Rights in Russian-occupied Crimea. The website was blocked partly preventing live coverage of discussions. Lithuanian police claim the attack came from abroad. According to Baltic Course, the cyber attack was aimed at preventing foreign viewers from watching the global gathering of the Tatar community.

#UKRAINE: Parliament Adopts Rules For Oct 25 Elections; Won't Be Held In Russian-Occupied Territories

Noting that the rules for Ukrainian elections cannot be properly conducted in Crimea or in other Russian-held territories in the east, parliament has pragmatically passed a law stating that local elections on Oct. 25 won't be conducted in those areas. The law also says 30% of candidates must be women.

#RUSSIA: Duma Considers Declaring Khrushchev's 1954 "Gift" of #Crimea to #Ukraine Illegal

Legislators are considering proposals to declare the 1954 transfer of Crimea to Ukraine by Soviet leader Nikita Khruschev illegal, strengthening Russia's claim to the region, which it annexed last year from Ukraine. The transfer was a "gift" by Khruschev to Ukraine, both of which were Soviet regions at the time.

#FRANCE: Sale Of 2 Warships To Russia Criticized By USA As "Unhelpful"

The US has criticized France for planning to deliver two warships to Russia despite its actions in Ukraine. State department spokeswoman Jen Psaki told press in Washington on Monday (12 May) "we have expressed our concerns to the French government over the sale. We'll continue to do so".
