A prominent critic of the Al-Sisi government has been stripped of his seat in parliament. Mohamed Anwar Al-Sadat, a nephew of former Pres. Anwar Sadat and head of the liberal Reform and Development Party, was removed by a two-thirds vote of his colleagues. He was accused of leaking information about internal conditions in Egypt to international institutions and seeking to "tarnish" parliament's image. He also allegedly leaked draft laws he had prepared on criminal procedures and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and leaked a government-drafted NGO law to foreign ambassadors in Egypt in a bid to mobilize them against the law. He did not defend himself.
