#JAPAN: Victims Of Forced Sterilization Law To Receive Apology, Compensation

[world politics news]

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe plans to issue a statement offering a state apology to those who were subject to forced sterilization under a now-defunct eugenics law after a redress bill clears the Diet.

His statement and the bill’s expected enactment this month to provide ¥3.2 million ($28,600) in state redress to each victim are unlikely to settle compensation disputes, however, as victims are demanding much larger payments. The Eugenic Protection Law was enacted in 1948, and was only repealed in 1996.

#GREECE: President Renews Claims Against Germany's Nazi Past; Says Reparation Demand Is "Legal"

[world politics news]

Greek President Prokopis Pavlopoulos has defended his nation's claim that it is owed war reparations from Germany. He made the comments after meeting last week with German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who was in the capital, Athens, on an official visit.

The demands of Greece regarding the reparations for crimes of the "inhuman" Nazi invasion and occupation of Greece during World War II are "legal" and "legally enforceable," Pavlopoulos told reporters.

Merkel, for her part, said Germans are aware of the crimes that Nazis had committed in Greece. However, German officials have in the recent past rejected claims for reparations from Greece, Poland and other nations.

Germany has in the past denied such a claim, saying that a 1953 agreement with the Polish government settled all claims. Poland counters that the deal was made with the Soviet puppet government, and doesn't count.

#POLAND: Gov't Creates Committee To Determine German War Reparations

[world politics news]

Poland's governing conservatives have set up a parliamentary committee tasked with looking into the extent of World War II reparations they claim is owed by Germany. A member of the governing Law and Justice Party says there is no set date for the committee to produce its results. The issue of war reparations, for decades considered as settled, was revived in July by party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Earlier this month Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said Warsaw "has the right" to ask for reparations. Germany disagrees, saying the issue was settled in the 1950s.
