#POLAND: Gov't Creates Committee To Determine German War Reparations

Poland's governing conservatives have set up a parliamentary committee tasked with looking into the extent of World War II reparations they claim is owed by Germany. A member of the governing Law and Justice Party says there is no set date for the committee to produce its results. The issue of war reparations, for decades considered as settled, was revived in July by party leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski. Earlier this month Prime Minister Beata Szydlo said Warsaw "has the right" to ask for reparations. Germany disagrees, saying the issue was settled in the 1950s.

Poland today abandoned its promise to the EU to take in 7,000 migrants because of the jihadist attacks in Brussels that killed 34 people. The country's previous government had agreed to take the migrants in, but today Prime Minister Beata Szydlo declared she would not be honoring the agreement.

Poland's prime minister says her government had not breached European or Polish laws, after the EU began an investigation into charges that Warsaw was undermining democratic principles. Bitter accusations have been exchanged between Polish and EU officials after the EU's executive asked Poland to explain laws pertaining to the top constitutional court and putting public media under direct government control.
